They could have imperfections such as creasing fanning inscriptions margin notes yellowing staining on edge or cover or pages bumps scuffs etc etc sometimes multiple of these. It's a wide category that encompasses anything that isn't almost-new down to anything that is slightly better than poor. We would NOT recommend gifting Good books - these should be considered reading copies. Our books are dispatched from a Yorkshire former cotton mill. We list via barcode/ISBN so please note that the images are stock images and may not be the exact copy you receive furthermore the details about edition and year might not be accurate as many publishers reuse the same ISBN for multiple editions and as we simply scan a barcode or enter an ISBN we do not check the validity of the edition data when listing. Overall a pleasing copy of this important translation of Joyce's tour de force. Slocum & Cahoon D17. This first French edition of Ulysses was the second translated edition of the book the first German edition was published in 1927 and one of only four translated editions published in Joyce's lifetime the other two being Czech 1930 and Japanese 1931. Interestingly key sections of the book were translated into French before the book was published in English for a "Special Session on James Joyce" hosted by Valery Larbaud and Adrienne Monnier Sylvia Beach's romantic and literary partner at Monnier's bookshop La Maison des Amis des Livres on December 7 1921 Ulysses was first published in English in 1922. Jacques-Benoist Méchin translated the final word of the book with a capitalized "Oui" which Joyce subsequently adopted for the English language version ".yes I said yes I will Yes" after a lengthy discussion with Méchin an artistic choice that contributed heavily to the enduring critical interest in that line. Assessing the impact of Ulysses T. S. Eliot said of Joyce "He single-handedly killed the 19th century." Ulysses is a stream-of-consciousness novel that follows Leopold Bloom through Dublin on an ordinary day June 16 1904-notably the same day that Joyce first went on a date with Nora Barnacle who would later become his wife. The book is heavily fragmented and allusive with a structure that loosely parallels Homer's The Odyssey. Regarding the book's complexity Joyce said "I've put in so many enigmas and puzzles that it will keep the professors busy for centuries arguing over what I meant and that's the only way of ensuring one's immortality.". First French Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good. Paris: La Maison des Amis des Livres hardcover

A Modern Fine Press Interpretation of a Modernist Masterpiece A beautifully realized late 20th-century fine press edition of Ulysses pairing Joyce's monumental text with the bold symbolic visual language of Mimmo Paladino. The etchings - printed in striking combinations of gold and black - offer a contemporary artistic response to Joyce's dense and allusive narrative. Mimmo Paladino born in Paduli on 18 December 1948 is an Italian sculptor painter and printmaker. He is a leading name in the Transvanguardia artistic movement and one of the many European artists to revive Expressionism in the 1980s. Jeff Clements MBE was born in 1934 and died in 2020. He was one of the leading figures in modern British bookbinding and design closely associated with the The Folio Society for whom he created a number of distinguished bindings. The production reflects the Folio Society's highest standards: luxurious materials careful typography and an emphasis on the book as an object of art. The full goatskin binding and solander case place this edition firmly within the tradition of modern private press craftsmanship. London: The Folio Society, 1998 unknown
1958réf. JJ048London: John Lane The Bodley Head 1958 First unlimited edition eighth printing 'Cheap Edition" to dust jacket flap. Publisher's green cloth with the Homeric bow device designed by Eric Gill stamped in blind to front board spine lettered in gilt; in the original pale green dust jacket lettered in black with the Homeric bow on the spine with an advertisement for James Joyce by Herbert Gorman on the rear panel. Very good book with moderate spotting to first few pages and edges of text block boards square and spine bright; very good or better unclipped dust jacket with top edge lightly worn upper and lower edges of flaps somewhat faded and very faint spotting to right edge of front panel barely noticeable. Overall a crisp and bright copy of Joyce's masterpiece. Considered one of the most important works of Modernist literature Ulysses was first published serially in The Little Review from March 1918 to December 1920 at which time copies of the magazine were seized and the magazine's publishers were taken to trial due to the sexually explicit nature of the novel. Because of the controversy surrounding Ulysses Joyce was unable to find a publisher for the book until his friend Sylvia Beach the American owner of Shakespeare and Company bookstore in Paris agreed to publish it. The stream-of-consciousness novel follows Leopold Bloom and Stephen Daedalus through Dublin on an ordinary day June 16 1904-notably the same day that Joyce first went on a date with Nora Barnacle who would later become his wife. First Unlimited Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/Dust Jacket Included. London: John Lane, The Bodley Head hardcover

The uncut errata sheet has a light stain along the leading edge not affecting the text. Housed in a quarter-leather and cloth clamshell case with color cover label reproducing the front cover of the book; the case is clean and tight attractive despite a very faint stain on the top edge and a few stray marks on the back. The second printing and first British edition of Joyce's landmark novel printed for John Rodker in London eight months after the first printing for Shakespeare and Company in Paris by the same printer in Dijon France. With a new title page and front matter and the first appearance of the errata.
