The main body of the book is concerned with the principles of growing propagating and caring for orchids in temperate regions. Discussions of the environmental conditions found where orchids grow in the wild help to give enthusiasts a clearer understading of the cultural needs of the plants under cultivation. Many of the orchids described in this book can be grown with success in a conservatory or on a windowsill others need rather more specific conditions that can be provided by a plant case or greenhouse. A brief look is also taken at orchids suitable for growing in the garden including those that can be grown in containers for summer display. In all Joyce Stewart describes well over 500 species and hybrids of this immense family. The carefully chosen colour illustrations and delightful historical prints show something of the amazing range and diversity of the ORchidaceae.” Timber Press, [1988]. hardcover books
2008réf. 2346102New York: Signet Classics 2008. Reprint. Mass Market Paperback. Fine. 4x0x6. New. An exceptional copy. 2008 Mass Market Paperback. xx 168 pp. Introduction by Joyce Carol Oates afterword by Vince Passaro. In this pair of literary voyages into the inner self Joseph Conrad has written two of the most chilling disturbing and noteworthy pieces of fiction of the twentieth century. Heart of Darkness is a devastating commentary on the corruptibility of humanity. Based on Conrad's own 1890 trip up the Congo River the story is told by Marlow the novelist's alter ego. It is a journey into darkness and horror - both literally as the narrator descends into a sinister jungle landscape and metaphorically as he encounters the morally depraved Mr. Kurtz. The Secret Sharer is the tale of a young sea captain's first command as he sails into the Gulf of Siam - and into an encounter with his mysterious “double” the shadow self of the unconscious mind. Joseph Conrad boldly experimented with the novella and novel forms filled his writing with the exotic places he himself had traveled and concerned himself with honor guilt moral alienation and sin. Heart of Darkness and The Secret Sharer encapsulate his literary achievements - and his haunting portrayal of the dark side of man. Signet Classics paperback books

The story begins with the first centuries of circumnavigation when few survived the attempt: In 1519 Ferdinand Magellan left Spain with five ships and 270 men but only one ship and 35 men returned not including Magellan who died in the Philippines. Starting with these dangerous voyages Joyce Chaplin takes us on a trip of our own as we travel with Francis Drake William Dampier Louis-Antoine de Bougainville and James Cook. Eventually sea travel grew much safer and passengers came on board. The most famous was Charles Darwin but some intrepid women became circumnavigators too - a Lady Brassey for example. Circumnavigation became a fad as captured in Jules Verne's classic novel Around the World in Eighty Days. Once continental railroads were built circumnavigators could traverse sea and land. Newspapers sponsored racing contests and people sought ways to distinguish themselves - by bicycling around the world for instance or by sailing solo. Steamships turned round-the-world travel into a luxurious experience as with the tours of Thomas Cook & Son. Famous authors wrote up their adventures including Mark Twain and Jack London and Elizabeth Jane Cochrane better known as Nellie Bly. Finally humans took to the skies to circle the globe in airplanes. Not much later Sputnik Gagarin and Glenn pioneered a new kind of circumnavigation - in orbit. Through it all the desire to take on the planet has tested the courage and capacity of the bold men and women who took up the challenge. Their exploits show us why we think of the Earth as home. Round About the Earth is itself a thrilling adventure. Simon & Schuster paperback books
