DESCRIPTION - ULYSSES is a novel by James Joyce first serialized in parts in the American journal The Little Review from March 1918 to December 1920 and then published in its entirety by Sylvia Beach on February 2 1922 in Paris. It is considered one of the most important works of Modernist literature. ULYSSES chronicles the passage through Dublin by its main character Leopold Bloom during an ordinary day June 16 1904. The title alludes to the hero of Homer's Odyssey Latinised into Ulysses and there are many parallels both implicit and explicit between the two works e.g. the correspondences between Leopold Bloom and Odysseus Molly Bloom and Penelope and Stephen Dedalus and Telemachus. June 16 is now celebrated by Joyce's fans worldwide as Bloomsday. ULYSSES totals 250000 words from a vocabulary of 30000 words with most editions containing between 644 and 1000 pages. Divided into 18 episodes' as they are referred to in most scholarly circles the book has been the subject of much controversy and scrutiny since its publication ranging from early obscenity trials to protracted textual Joyce Wars'. ULYSSES's groundbreaking stream-of-consciousness technique careful structuring and highly experimental prose - full of puns parodies allusions - as well as for its rich characterizations and broad humour has made the book perhaps the most highly regarded work in Modernist writing. inventory #2435 hardcover

Professor Joyce shows not only how archaeologists learn about the lives of men and women in the past but also why the stories they can tell are important to hear today. She challenges us to reconsider how we think about sex and its implications for each person. Showing the critical role of the material world in forming our experiences of and concepts about sex this book connects archaeology firmly to contemporary studies of material culture and identity. DESCRIPTION - William Blake: The Painter at Work offers an innovative and revealing approach to one of the most individual of all British artists. Although the highly idiosyncratic nature of Blake's techniques has long been recognized this is the first book to explore the practical methods behind his unique style - providing a fuller understanding of exactly how this secretive artist worked as a painter. Richly illustrated with Blake's temperas watercolors and color prints and drawings the book includes essays by leading international authorities who illuminate Blake's techniques and materials using up-to-the-minute research methods. Their analysis of numerous individual works reveals for example that Blake used essentially the same range of colors in them all even if some of the more than 100 temperas he painted from 1799 to 1826 have since darkened or faded. The book consists of four main sections. Introductory chapters are followed by essays on Blake's watercolors large color prints and temperas. An epilogue discusses the presentation of the paintings and appendices provide more detail on the works discussed. The contributors are John Anderson Peter Bower Noa Cahaner McManus John Dean Robin Hamlyn Bronwyn Ormsby Brian Singer Joyce H. Townsend and Piers Townshend. William Blake: The Painter at Work not only casts new light on the incomparable oeuvre that made Blake one of the most perennially popular of visual artists but also points to ways of preserving this work for future generations. There are still unanswered questions but now there are answers too. inventory #35016 hardcover
