1882rif. 5818London United Kingdom: George Philip & Son 1882. First Edition. hardcover. Very Good. John Bartholomew. Publication: London George Philip & Son 1882 Formatting: Crown 8vo pp. iv 33 double-page colour maps 41 index 4. Condition Report: Very Good. The book maintains its structural integrity standing square and firm which is commendable for an atlas intended for practical use. The original green cloth binding remains largely vibrant and the gilt tooling to the front board and spine featuring a striking Irish harp and winged maiden is pleasingly bright and unoxidised. However the book does exhibit signs of careful use and historical storage: there is a noticeable patch of scuffing to the right of the central gilt device on the front board and the spine ends are bumped with mild fraying at the head and tail. The blind-stamped borders and rear board show only minor scattered blemishes. Internally the text block is sound with uniform age-toning to the page edges. The preliminary leaves present light scattered foxing but the pages and double-page maps remain free of major flaws tears or structural damage resulting in a highly presentable and complete survival. Catalogue Note: This is a scarce First Edition of this comprehensive Irish atlas noted in the preliminary publisher's advertisement as forming part of the 'Handy Volumes for Tourists' series. The volume is richly illustrated with 33 double-page coloured maps constructed by the renowned Scottish cartographer John Bartholomew showcasing the baronies towns railways and physical features of Ireland in exquisite detail. Complete nineteenth-century copies of this specific atlas are exceedingly scarce on the open market as many were either heavily worn through travel or subsequently dismantled by print dealers to sell the maps individually. It remains free from heavy institutional stamps or invasive modern markings making it a highly desirable survival for collectors. Constructed by the esteemed cartographer John Bartholomew and revised by Irish historian P. W. Joyce Philips' Handy Atlas of the Counties of Ireland is a masterclass in Victorian mapmaking. Designed as a practical and comprehensive guide for the angler sportsman and tourist the atlas offers thirty-three beautifully rendered double-page colour maps that capture the changing landscape of 1880s Ireland. Complete with a meticulous consulting index and details spanning from early railway routes to country seats this pocket-sized volume serves as a brilliant historical window into late nineteenth-century Ireland appealing equally to collectors of Irish history and cartography enthusiasts. Slightly rubbed to extremities occasional marking else a crisp unpressed and generously margined copy displaying several untrimmed fore-edges and some marginal paper flaws. A lucid abridgement by English radical Jeremiah Joyce 1763-1816 of Scottish philosopher Adam Smith's monumental Wealth of nations it condensed the two thick quartos of the original edition London 1776 or the by then well known bulky triple-decker octavo editions of the late eighteenth century into a single convenient octavo volume.
