1970Best.-Nr. 0008113U. S. Good. 1970. On offer is an interesting group of three notebooks that offer an insight into the thoughts of a famous astrologist and syndicated columnist. The group consists of 3 wire-bound notebooks each 9 3/8 inches by 6 inches. Each contains 150 pages and are 47% 34% and 31% complete respectively. The covers and all pages are intact. There are numerous notes clipped into pages at varying places. The handwriting is legible and all three are in good condition. Joyce Jillson styled herself as the "Hollywood Astrologer". saying she decided such show business milestones as advising George Lucas to open his genre-launching "Star Wars" on May 27 1977. She began her career as an actress in the 1960's staring in The Man From U.N.C.L.E and most famously Peyton Place. In 1973 she starred in Superchick. She also had guest appearances on Columbo Lou Grant and Police Woman. Her real strength however was her regular appearance on television talk shows such as Good Morning America The Tonight Show and The Merv Griffin Show. In addition she also hosted her own syndicated program The Joyce Jillson Show. Jillson had been reading about and studying astrology since she was a little girl. By the 1970's she was firmly in the astrology 'business' as noted above. She garnered some big-name corporate clients such as 20th Century Fox Ford Motor Company and the LA Dodgers. Most famously she claimed in 1988 that she had provided astrological advice to President Ronald Reagan and his wife. She wrote an astrology column that was syndicated to about 200 newspapers. She published several books including The Art of Flirting. Some of her notes in these notebooks clearly refer to her work in television. She is very aware of communication strategies especially as it intersects with body language: "body language is a symphony. there is a feedback factor between a person's body and self-esteem". She notes the use of tried and true sales techniques such as: "We know that people are more readily presumed to change their attitudes when they perceive the communicator as being a person like themselves i.e. someone they can identify with and therefore trust. Also the higher the communicator's social status why ads use celebs supposed expertise the more credible his message becomes. ." There are brief or cryptic references to Pete Rose baseball player Willie Wilson baseball player George Brent actor George C. Scott actor Michael Jackson entertainer and others. Other entries appear to be notes preparing for interviews or personal critiques of her performance in interviews: "RADIO emphasis patter . downward inflection gives relief to audience - relax gossipy over the back fence - they want to believe looked stiff and neck turned stiffly . too harsh lighting . apparently after an appearance on an NBC program"; Manuscript; 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF 20th CENTURY AMERICA IN 1970s AMERICA IN 1980s JOYCE JILLSON; ASTROLOGY; MICHAEL JACKSON; PEYTON PLACE; MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E.; SUPERCHICK; GOOD MORNING AMERICA; MERV GRIFFIN; TONIGHT SHOW; ASTROLOGIST TO THE STARS; PRESIDENT RONALD REAGAN; NANCY REAGAN; LA DODGERS; 20TH CENTURY FOX AMERICAN ACTRESSES AMERICAN ASTROLOGERS ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY IN THE U.S. IN 1970s AND 1980s USE OF BODY LANGUAGE COMMUNICATION STRATEGIES AMERICANA HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENT LETTER AUTOGRAPH WRITER HAND WRITTEN DOCUMENTS SIGNED LETTERS MANUSCRIPTS DIARY DIARIES JOURNALS PERSONAL HISTORY SOCIAL HISTORY HISTORICAL HOLOGRAPH WRITERS AUTOGRAPHS PERSONAL MEMOIR MEMORIAL ANTIQUITÉ CONTRAT VÉLIN DOCUMENT MANUSCRIT PAPIER ANTIKE BRIEF PERGAMENT DOKUMENT MANUSKRIPT PAPIER OGGETTO D'ANTIQUARIATO ATTO VELINA DOCUMENTO MANOSCRITTO CARTA ANTIGÜEDAD HECHO VITELA DOCUMENTO MANUSCRITO PAPEL . unknown

Housed in a custom half morocco slipcase. Joyce began working on Finnegans Wake shortly after the 1922 publication of Ulysses. By 1924 installments of Joyce's new avant-garde work began to appear in serialized form in Parisian literary journals transatlantic review and transition under the title "fragments from Work in Progress". The actual title of the work remained a secret until the book was published in its entirety on 4 May 1939. The work has assumed a preeminent place in English literature. Anthony Burgess praised the book as "a great comic vision one of the few books of the world that can make us laugh aloud on nearly every page." Harold Bloom called the book "Joyce's masterpiece" and wrote that "if aesthetic merit were ever again to center the canon Finnegans Wake would be as close as our chaos could come to the heights of Shakespeare and Dante." Modern Library named it one of the 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century. The Viking Press hardcover

1922Best.-Nr. 20385Paris Tokyo: Shakespeare and Company Yushodo/Inkpen Press 1922 2001. A very finely produced facsimile of the first edition of Ulysses LIMITED to 120 copies. The facsimile is printed on fine paper by the Inkpen Press. Large thick 8vo 195 x 235 mm beautifully hand-bound in full crushed blue morocco the spine handsomely lettered in gilt housed in a blue moire cloth slipcase. 10 732 2 pp. A mint pristine and superb copy. A BEAUTIFULLY PRODUCED FACSIMILE OF THE FIRST EDITION OF JAMES JOYCE’S ULYSSES the most important novel of the twentieth century . The true first edition of this book is now beyond the range of all but a very small handful of collectors this facsimile provides the opportunity to own this important and handsome work in a format and with the feel of the first edition. ULYSSES can be viewed as the pinnacle of the Modernist movement and its impact on all subsequent western literature is unmistakable. Such writers as Virginia Woolf John Dos Passos William Faulkner Samuel Beckett Malcolm Lowry and Anthony Burgess have all paid tribute consciously or unconsciously to Joyce's influence. Burgess as well pronounced it the greatest single work in the English literature of the last century and he is not alone in that opinion. According to James Spoerri "This fortunate combination of printer and publisher resulted in the appearance of ULYSSES as a book whose physical aspect is particularly suited to its content. It is a fat and inviting volume the blue and white of its covers subtly evocative of the Greece whose epic it so closely parallels" quoted in the catalogue for the Garden Sale Sotheby's 1989. While this facsimile is of course not the true first edition the physical attributes are the same. [Shakespeare and Company ], Yushodo/Inkpen Press hardcover

This is a fragment from "Finnegans Wake" beautifully printed in Holland on thick paper using an unusually large round and vaguely Medieval typeface. Our copy could hardly be in better condition--as close to mint as one could hope to find and with all original components. Joyce's daughter Lucia 1907-82 was diagnosed with schizophrenia when in her early twenties and was permanently institutionalized by 1935. She had desperately tried and failed to become a dancer and Joyce was determined to find a new artistic outlet for her believing it would be therapeutic. He hit upon the design of ornamental capitals like this one and even went so far as to give publishers the money to pay her for her work. Gotham Book Mart unknown
