One of 75 copies unnumbered elephant folio size 156 pp. with numerous specimens in a custom box with prospectus and "El Paso keepsake" signed by James Linden. A tour de force of the ephemeral printing of the inimitable Adrian Wilson who with his wife Joyce Lancaster Wilson produced some of the finest and interesting private press work in San Francisco during the second half of the 20th century. The Press in Tuscany Alley was one of San Francisco's small private press jewels. Adrian Wilson 1924-1988 was both a book designer and a scholar authoring "The Design of Books" which is regarded as a classic text on book design. As the New York Times stated in his obituary: "Mr. Wilson designed and printed scores of books and became a mentor to younger men and women eager to learn the printer's craft. His many volumes while little-known to the general public are famous among print connoisseurs and many are collector's items." This spectacular work pays homage to the ephemeral work of Adrian Wilson in which both his perfection of technique and whimsicality shine through. Housed in a custom slipcase are first a volume which contains the bibliographical information on Wilson's ephemera; not only does it present tipped-in specimens but almost every page has either a printed and coloured cut or an illustration which has been hand-coloured. Second is a folding box which is stuffed with samples of the ephemera over forty pieces by our count. For any aficionado of private press printing this work is a bounty of both information and visual delight. ___DESCRIPTION: The volume is bound in natural linen boards Adrian Wilson's signature debossed in blind on the front board paper label on the spine fore-edge uncut bottom edge rough-cut a single piece of ephemera loosely laid in at the front half-title in red with a green cut frontis a black-and-white photograph of Wilson examining a sheet in his printing studio title page in red and black sectional headings and page numbers in red throughout a mulitiplicity of specimens and illustrations throughout signed and dated in pencil by James Linden at the colophon; designed and hand-coloured by James Linden text in Janson on Rives Heavyweight with end-papers of a special J. FREE UPGRADE to Courier/Priority Shipping Upon Request - IN STOCK AND IMMEDIATELY AVAILABLE FOR SHIPMENT - Flawless copy brand new pristine never opened -- 148 pp. ; 65 images. -- with a bonus offer--; In his book "A Lover's Discourse" Roland Barthes attempted to theorize the language used by lovers to describe each other. It is arguably a text about loneliness suggesting that even romantic language confesses the distance that always exists between people: if we could achieve perfect unity with others language would not be necessary. This catalogue documents an exhibition about how "couples" discourse - about the ways in which artists cope with the social connections and practicalities of being artists in a couple. It is about the commonalities as well as the differences the intimacies as well as the public articulations - in other words the negotiations that are required in any relationship. It might be a truism to say that the very notion of "the couple" is undergoing significant transformation at the moment. Legal changes now allow many same-sex marriages in the United States even as increasing numbers of people both gay and straight choose to enjoy unions and family structures beyond such conventional forms. Now is of course the perfect time to investigate more carefully the ways in which artists construct and articulate their positions as "couples." . 2006. 0911209654 . FREE UPGRADE to Courier/Priority Shipping Upon Request - IN STOCK AND IMMEDIATELY AVAILABLE FOR SHIPMENT - Flawless copy brand new pristine never opened -- 96 pp. ; 62 illus. 53 in color. -- with a bonus offer--; Between the red canyon walls of Canyon de Chelly in Arizona in the heart of the Navajo Nation stands an eight-hundred-foot sandstone rock formation known as Spider Rock. According to Dine oral history this sacred place is where Spider Woman or Na ashe'ii'tasdzaa makes her home. For centuries her gift of weaving has provided the Dine with a constant means of sustenance. Dine textile and basketry weavings in Santa Fe's Museum of Indian Arts and Culture collections created between the 1850s and the 1890s allow us to explore the oral history of Spider Woman and the early history of the Dine during this time. This book presents two viewpoints on Dine weaving. One is the perspective of Dine weaver and museum educator Joyce Begay-Foss and the other viewpoint is from well-known Dine textile scholar and anthropologist Marian Rodee. Starting with early baskets there is visual evidence of Spider Woman's influence for it was this early knowledge of hand weaving and dyes that transferred into early textile weaving after the Dine acquired wool. The Dine textiles dating from 1840 to 188o were primarily made for Native use as well as for intertribal trade. They include one-piece dresses mantas two-piece dresses women's shoulder blankets and ponchos. Designs range from simple bands and stripes to intricate interlocking serape patterns. Of particular interest are fine examples of highly recognised chief blankets as well as the crowning achievement of classic-period serapes showing the finest de-signs and materials. This title is published in association with the New Mexico Museum of Indian Arts & Culture. . 2011. 0890135312 . Museum of New Mexico Pr paperback
2008ref. 84170University of Washington Press. New. Hardcover. FREE UPGRADE to Courier/Priority Shipping Upon Request - IN STOCK AND IMMEDIATELY AVAILABLE FOR SHIPMENT - Flawless copy brand new pristine never opened -- xvii 1 228 pages 70 illustrations; 4to. -- with a bonus offer--; In this generously illustrated volume the distinguished teacher author and critic Joyce Brodsky brings together works by the expatriate Chinese painter Yun Gee and his Chinese American daughter Li-lan exploring connections between each artist's life and paintings. Yun Gee 1906-1963 was born in China emigrated as a young man to San Francisco and after living there and in Paris spent the latter part of his life in New York City. Li-lan was born in New York to Yun Gee and Helen Wimmer Gee. She still lives and works in and near the city of her birth but has also spent long periods in Japan and more recently in China. Father and daughter alike exemplify the desire to live and work in freedom from the restrictions of national identity a choice that permits openness to different cultures. For Yun Gee and Li-lan this openness was never a reflection of trends in the art world but was an element of life itself fully embraced and therefore embodied in each artist's paintings. Both artists can be understood as cosmopolitan and transnational figures - citizens in Homi Bhabha's terms of contemporary culture's "middle passage." This book then although not primarily theoretical is informed by ideas of hybridity transnationalism and cosmopolitanism. As artists who have embraced multinational multicultural and multiracial experiences Yun Gee and Li-lan have combined those experiences intrinsically sometimes in spite of the pain that such a complex passage may entail. Li-lan was exposed to Yun Gee's paintings and his cultural sophistication when she was a child and this exposure was crucial to her artistic being. In turn she has broadened and deepened the audience for her father's art through her archival work her conservation of and her efforts to encourage exhibitions of his work. . 2008. 0295987758 . This is the first book to consider Kozloff's work since the late 1990s within the broader context of her career and the history of map-related art. Charting her influential contribution to the Pattern and Decoration movement--which was an integral part of the downtown New York art scene of the 1970s--the volume also explores Kozloff's later large-scale public artworks. Fifty full-color photo spreads are dedicated to key projects--Targets Boys' Art American History and Voyages--and accompanied by an essay by critic Nancy Princenthal and an interview with the artist. Joyce Kozloff is a founding member of the Pattern and Decoration movement and the Heresies collective and is a primary figure in the feminist art world. . 2008. 0976848880 . D. A.
