1927réf. 938 - 402 - 895Ninth printing preserved in the original wrappers Publisher and Year: Paris: Shakespeare & Company 1927 Edition: Ninth printing stated on the copyright page. The type was entirely reset in the eighth printing to incorporate a variety of textual corrections with those plates used through the eleventh printing issued in 1930. The novel was originally issued in 1922 in a limited run of 1000 copies. Slocum & Cahoon pp. 25-26 Condition and Description: Octavo ~7.5 x 6.75" publisher's blue wrappers printed in white 735 pp. Wrappers rubbed. Flaking to the paper at the joints and extremities most heavily to the crown. Tanning to the edges and spine. Wrappers remain attached but with two short splits at the ends of the rear joint as shown in the final two photos. Binding firm. Pages tanned but clean without any prior owner's markings. "History Stephen said is a nightmare from which I am trying to awake." Ulysses is widely regarded as one of the best and most defining novels of the century. Despite its later canonization the novel was widely banned upon release with distribution relying on subterfuge and smuggling operations to evade law enforcement. Despite these efforts large portions of the first February 1922 and second October 1922 printings were seized and destroyed. All but a handful of the third printing January 1923 met the same fate. Many copies were stripped of their recognizable wrappers or rebound into the new covers of unrelated titles as camouflage. The novel would not be legalized in the United States until 1933 and the United Kingdom in 1936. Copies from the 1920s are relics of an era when free speech in the arts was under threat. A lucid abridgement by English radical Jeremiah Joyce 1763-1816 of Scottish philosopher Adam Smith's monumental Wealth of nations it condensed the two thick quartos of the original edition London 1776 or the by then well known bulky triple-decker octavo editions of the late eighteenth century into a single convenient octavo volume. The project was then taken over by Joyce's German publisher Rhein-Verlag who held a competition to find a translator for Ulysses. The competition was won by Georg Goyert and in August 1926 he met with Joyce in Ostend to revise the text. The publication was successful and on 19 November Joyce sent a postcard to Claud W. 1955réf. 414208Cambridge Massachusetts: The Poets' Theatre Workshop 1955. Hardcover. Good. Broadside illustrated in color on stiff cardstock. Measuring 10.25" x 13.75". Two incorrectly used printed apostrophes are whited-out by hand some horizontal creases and a small light stain near very good. Poster for Manning’s stage adaptation of Joyce’s novel that Manning arranged in 1955 as The Voice of Shem. Manning was a regular cast member at the Abbey Theatre a playwright and was a filmmaker. After a distinguished career in Ireland she moved to Boston where she served as managing director of the Idler Theatre at Radcliffe College in the 1940s and was one of the founding members of the Poet’s Theatre in Cambridge in 1950. The poster notes that tickets were on sale at the Mandrake Book Store on Boylston Street in Cambridge. Interesting period-style illustration of a beer quaffer blathering over the cantilevered corpse of Finnegan. The original performances were in April of 1955; this return engagement ran for little more than a week in late November and early December 1955. OCLC locates no copies of the poster although copies of Manning's adaptation in book form published by the Harvard University Press are plentiful. We found a black and white rendition of the poster image online on a French blog but could find no illuminating information there. Presumably these posters would have been extremely ephemeral.
