ref. 14362-Bucknell University Press 2001-. First edition. 222 pages with index. Cloth. Fine in fine dustjacket. This study makes the case that the novel's intricate self-consciousness begins as a very recognizable story: the 'Kunstlerroman.' In such a reading Ulysses emerges as the story of the time-obsessed Stephen Dedalus who desires to compose a masterful chronicle that will one day rival the timeless narratives of Ovid and Homer. McBride's analysis treats at length Stephen's poetic theories and compositions examinig them as clear forerunners to the novel that the reader is reading. The culminating point is the claim that the figures of Leopold and Molly Bloom may be elaborate fictions created by Stephen. Ulysses and the Metamorphosis of Stephen Dedalus. 1949ref. 929Y63London: Michael Joseph 1949-1959. First edition. Cloth. Very Good/Good. 8" by 5". None. A set of four first edition novels from Anglo-Irish author Joyce Cary including the second and third parts to his 'Second Trilogy'. With the publisher's original dust wrappers 'Except the Lord' being the only one clipped. The Second Trilogy centres on the career of a volatile politician Chester Nimmo and is told through the additional perspectives of his wife Nina and her cousin Jim. 'Except the Lord' 1953 recounts Nimmo's childhood and youth in the West Country detailing his poor circumstances and his sister Georgina's support for the family after their mother dies.'Not Honour More' 1955 centres more on Jim Nina's cousin. Set during the General Strike of 1926 Jim is married to Nina but living in an uncomfortable situation as Nimmo has moved in with them and clashes with his politics. The other two novels included in this set are:'A Fearful Joy' 1949 which covers the very full life of an English woman's life across two centuries. Other dust wrappers are very smart with edge wear most notable to the spine heads and tails. Marks and spots to the wraps. Internally firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean with offsetting to the endpapers. Very Good Michael Joseph hardcover
1957ref. 4856Plaistow London United Kingdom: George Rainbird in association with Michael Joseph 1957. hardcover. Near Fine. Joyce Cary. Publication: London George Rainbird in association with Michael Joseph 1957 Formatting: 8vo pp. x 333. Condition Report: Near Fine. The original publisher’s marbled boards remain bright clean and tight displaying virtually no shelf-wear to the extremities. The red morocco spine label is intact with unoxidised brilliant gilt tooling while the spine itself shows only the slightest barely perceptible trace of the uniform sunning typical of this edition. The binding is remarkably firm and the text block is exceptionally crisp; internally the pages are uniformly bright and completely free of spotting or foxing complemented by a vibrant red top-stain. The accompanying slipcase matching the marbled paper design remains structurally entirely sound with only faint superficial rubbing to the edges and minor surface scuffing. Catalogue Note: This limited edition restricted to 1500 copies of which this is number 506 was designed according to the express wishes of the author shortly before his death. A highly regarded production printed at the esteemed Curwen Press this memorial edition features a frontispiece self-portrait printed directly from a plate lithographed by the author alongside eight additional illustrations reproduced by photo-litho-offset from Cary’s original pencil drawings. Significantly the text includes The Old Strife at Plant's a discarded chapter from the original manuscript offering a unique textual variant not found in standard trade copies. The elegant binding was executed by Mansell's of London with title-page and spine lettering beautifully engraved by John Woodcock. It remains an uncommon and highly desirable collector's piece on the open market particularly when found complete with its fragile slipcase in such well-preserved condition. Considered one of the finest English novels written about the artistic temperament The Horse's Mouth follows the brilliant larcenous and utterly irrepressible painter Gulley Jimson as he navigates the streets of London in a relentless quest for money and inspiration. Jimson’s visionary genius and appetite for self-destruction collide in a narrative that is both uproariously funny and profoundly moving painting a vivid portrait of a man consumed by the terrible beauty of his own creative drive. Something of a curiosity as the first edition is usually given as by Chatto and Windus. Both Joyce and Lawrence's bibliography do not show this issue. There is a small stamp at the front showing that the book was bought at the New Oxford Book Company in Lahore possibly indicating an exported issue or the 'London and Toronto' may indicate a Canadian and Commonwealth printing which could provide a clue as to its origins. hardcover
