1944réf. 55458New York: Harcourt Brace and Company 1944. First printing. Near fine in a very good plus jacket. Inscribed first edition association copy of this effort to unpuzzle Joyce's famously inscrutable masterpiece - signed to the famed Jungian analyst Erlo van Waveren. Erlo van Waveren practiced psychotherapy in New York with his wife Ann for more than four decades. Both studied with Carl Jung and were regular attendees at the Jung Institute. Campbell himself was famously influenced by Jung and edited an edition of his work an influence heavily reflected in this Campbell's first book which investigates Joyce's "monomyth" an idea deeply indebted to the renowned psychologist's idea of the "collective unconscious." The van Waverans were also instrumental in the establishment of the Bollingen Series which published Campbell's most important work THE HERO WITH A THOUSAND FACES. It was Elro and Ann who introduced Paul and Amy Mellon benefactors of the series to Jung after whose Bollingen Tower the series was named and whose work served as its driving influence. A warm and significant association. 8'' x 5.25''. Original green cloth boards. Original price-clipped yellow printed dust jacket. 2 xiv 366 2 pages. Very good book with moderate spotting to first few pages and edges of text block boards square and spine bright; very good or better unclipped dust jacket with top edge lightly worn upper and lower edges of flaps somewhat faded and very faint spotting to right edge of front panel barely noticeable. Overall a crisp and bright copy of Joyce's masterpiece. Considered one of the most important works of Modernist literature Ulysses was first published serially in The Little Review from March 1918 to December 1920 at which time copies of the magazine were seized and the magazine's publishers were taken to trial due to the sexually explicit nature of the novel. Because of the controversy surrounding Ulysses Joyce was unable to find a publisher for the book until his friend Sylvia Beach the American owner of Shakespeare and Company bookstore in Paris agreed to publish it. The stream-of-consciousness novel follows Leopold Bloom and Stephen Daedalus through Dublin on an ordinary day June 16 1904-notably the same day that Joyce first went on a date with Nora Barnacle who would later become his wife. The book is heavily fragmented and allusive with a structure that loosely parallels Homer's The Odyssey. Regarding the book's complexity Joyce said "I've put in so many enigmas and puzzles that it will keep the professors busy for centuries arguing over what I meant and that's the only way of ensuring one's immortality.". First Unlimited Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/Dust Jacket Included. London: John Lane, The Bodley Head hardcover books

Slim folio original printed paper wraps uncut and unopened original glassine original gilt chemise and green cardboard slipcase. Housed in a custom chemise and clamshell box. $17500.First edition number 50 of only 100 signed copies on ÒImperial Hand-Made Iridescent JapanÓ paper out of a total edition of 685 copies. A stunning copy. This is one of several fragments from Work in Progress published in 1939 as Finnegans Wake that Joyce issued to raise money while working on the mammoth project. One of the publishers Jack Kahane who idolized Joyce had originally asked Sylvia Beach to allow him to take over publication of Ulysses. Instead she introduced Kahane to Joyce who then agreed to let him publish Haveth Childers Everywhere. The effort nearly ruined Kahane and only by selling the American rights to the work were he and co-publisher Henry Babou able to save themselves from bankruptcy. When Faber and Faber was preparing the first London editions of Anna Livia Plurabelle and Haveth Childers Everywhere 1930 and 1931 respectively ""Joyce wrote rhymes for the 'blurb' on the dust jacket. The Haveth Childers verse is quoted in this description headlineÉ He was a little annoyed when the publicity departmentÉ used them only on a mimeographed publicity release to which they prefixed a note: 'The Sales department puzzled as such departments are wont to be have sought some light on the two James Joyce contributions to Criterion Miscellany. Below the explanations offered are passed on that you may be able to derive similar enlightenment"" Ellmann 617n. Slocum and Cahoon A41.
