An exceptional copy. 2008 Mass Market Paperback. xx 168 pp. Introduction by Joyce Carol Oates afterword by Vince Passaro. In this pair of literary voyages into the inner self Joseph Conrad has written two of the most chilling disturbing and noteworthy pieces of fiction of the twentieth century. Heart of Darkness is a devastating commentary on the corruptibility of humanity. Based on Conrad's own 1890 trip up the Congo River the story is told by Marlow the novelist's alter ego. It is a journey into darkness and horror - both literally as the narrator descends into a sinister jungle landscape and metaphorically as he encounters the morally depraved Mr. Kurtz. The Secret Sharer is the tale of a young sea captain's first command as he sails into the Gulf of Siam - and into an encounter with his mysterious “double” the shadow self of the unconscious mind. Joseph Conrad boldly experimented with the novella and novel forms filled his writing with the exotic places he himself had traveled and concerned himself with honor guilt moral alienation and sin. Heart of Darkness and The Secret Sharer encapsulate his literary achievements - and his haunting portrayal of the dark side of man. Signet Classics paperback books

Binding tight and square pages clean bright and unmarked. 2012 Trade Paperback. xxi 535 pp. For almost 500 years human beings have been finding ways to circle the Earth - by sail steam or liquid fuel; by cycling driving flying going into orbit even by using their own bodily power. The story begins with the first centuries of circumnavigation when few survived the attempt: In 1519 Ferdinand Magellan left Spain with five ships and 270 men but only one ship and 35 men returned not including Magellan who died in the Philippines. Starting with these dangerous voyages Joyce Chaplin takes us on a trip of our own as we travel with Francis Drake William Dampier Louis-Antoine de Bougainville and James Cook. Eventually sea travel grew much safer and passengers came on board. The most famous was Charles Darwin but some intrepid women became circumnavigators too - a Lady Brassey for example. Circumnavigation became a fad as captured in Jules Verne's classic novel Around the World in Eighty Days. Once continental railroads were built circumnavigators could traverse sea and land. Newspapers sponsored racing contests and people sought ways to distinguish themselves - by bicycling around the world for instance or by sailing solo. Steamships turned round-the-world travel into a luxurious experience as with the tours of Thomas Cook & Son. Famous authors wrote up their adventures including Mark Twain and Jack London and Elizabeth Jane Cochrane better known as Nellie Bly. Finally humans took to the skies to circle the globe in airplanes. Not much later Sputnik Gagarin and Glenn pioneered a new kind of circumnavigation - in orbit. Through it all the desire to take on the planet has tested the courage and capacity of the bold men and women who took up the challenge. Their exploits show us why we think of the Earth as home. Round About the Earth is itself a thrilling adventure. Simon & Schuster paperback books
2018Best.-Nr. 2207986Saratoga Springs: Journal Arts Press 2018. Trade Paperback. Fine. 8x5x0. Brand new from publisher. 2018 Trade Paperback. 115 pp. "Before They Were Our Mothers was conceived when editor Patricia A. Nugent realized at her mother's funeral that she knew very little about her mother's life before her mother was her mother. She'd never asked; her mother had never offered. Nugent deeply regretted missing the opportunity to know her mother better. But that window had closed. To help others avoid similar remorse she compiled this anthology of real-life stories about women before they were mothers. In addition to deeply evocative first-person accounts Before They Were Our Mothers offers readers a personal history of world events from the late 1800s to the mid-1900s as written in the present moment by current-day descendants: Joyce Hunt Bouyea; Carol R. Daggs; Ginny Riedman-Dangler; Constance A. Dodge; Cathy Fedoruk; Nadia Ghent; Zoe Ann; Christensen Gonza; Crystal S. Hamelink; Rachael Z. Ikins; Donna Jackel; Catherine Ruggiero Lanci; Christy O'Callaghan; Josephine Pasciullo; Barbara J. Spaeth; and Sue Sweet Van Hook. Universal themes weave delicate threads through these disparate women's lives. Well-meaning parents making questionable decisions; arranged marriages; the desire for education and a career; unplanned pregnancies; the centrality of faith and religion; the need for family and affirmation; medical advances; the brutality of war; and the crippling effects of poverty prejudice and discrimination. Themes not so different from circumstances in our lives today. You won't forget the women in these stories; you won't want to. And they may inspire you to tell your children your stories - before you were their parent. Journal Arts Press paperback books
