Coming four years after the Third World Liberation Front protests resulted in the creation of the Department of Ethnic Studies at UC Berkeley this conference reflects much of the early dilemmas and difficulties faced by the Asian American movement. 1936ref. 2352401New York: Harrison Smith and Robert Haas / Grosset & Dunlap 1936. Reissue. Hard Cover. Very Good/Good. Anderson Harry. Appears to be an original edition married to the movie tie-in jacket Harrison Smith and Robert Haas listed on title page and spine Grosset & Dunlap on jacket but it's possible Grosset purchased unsold copies from Smith & Haas and added their own jacket so we are calling this a reissue rather than a first edition married to a reissue jacket. Board edges slightly faded jacket edges rubbed with some loss from corners. Binding tight and square text clean bright and unmarked. 1936 Hard Cover. Harry Anderson jacket art depicting a World War I soldier in a trench shown in a similar pose as a Prohibition-era gangster. Rear jacket flap advertises Ernest Hemingway's A Farewell to Arms. This novel inspired the 1937 film starring Spencer Tracy as the protagonist who struggles to return to his old life after the war and ends up turning to a life of crime informed by the skills he learned as a soldier. An interesting juxtaposition of the military novel and noir crime fiction which also examines the disconnection many veterans feel upon returning home. Cowen served in the Canadian Expeditionary Force during World War I for which he was awarded the Military Cross. Harrison Smith and Robert Haas / Grosset & Dunlap hardcover books

These essays have been written by leading scholars on early bookselling reading habits and the impact of printing in early America. Printing history in its broadest context may be viewed as a distinct form of cultural history a synthesis combining the attention to ideas that is central to intellectual history with the emphasis on patterns of behavior and organization characteristic of social history. This work encourages new approaches to the study of early printing including the fusion of bibliographical analysis and the broadly cultural approach of the French historians of books and society. Together the essays demonstrate how the world of print changed between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries - both shaping and reflecting the larger American culture. Titles of the papers presented here include "The Uses of Literacy in New England 1600-1850" "The Anglo-American Book Trade before 1776" "The Wages of Piety: The Boston Book Trade of Jeremy Condy" "The Colonial Retail Book Trade: Availability and Affordability of Reading Material in Mid-Eighteenth Century" Virginia" "Bibliography and the Cultural Historian: Notes on the Eighteenth-Century Novel" "Early Music Printing and Publishing" Books and the Social Authority of Learning: The Case of Mid-Eighteenth-Century Virginia" "Elias Smith and the Rise of Religious Journalism in the Early Republic" and "Print and the Public Lecture System 1840-1860." Most of the essays were originally prepared for an October 1980 conference of the same title sponsored by the American Antiquarian Society. Small embossed private ownership stamp on first blank page. An exceptional copy. 2008 Mass Market Paperback. xx 168 pp. Introduction by Joyce Carol Oates afterword by Vince Passaro. In this pair of literary voyages into the inner self Joseph Conrad has written two of the most chilling disturbing and noteworthy pieces of fiction of the twentieth century. Heart of Darkness is a devastating commentary on the corruptibility of humanity. Based on Conrad's own 1890 trip up the Congo River the story is told by Marlow the novelist's alter ego. It is a journey into darkness and horror - both literally as the narrator descends into a sinister jungle landscape and metaphorically as he encounters the morally depraved Mr. Kurtz. The Secret Sharer is the tale of a young sea captain's first command as he sails into the Gulf of Siam - and into an encounter with his mysterious “double” the shadow self of the unconscious mind. Joseph Conrad boldly experimented with the novella and novel forms filled his writing with the exotic places he himself had traveled and concerned himself with honor guilt moral alienation and sin. Heart of Darkness and The Secret Sharer encapsulate his literary achievements - and his haunting portrayal of the dark side of man. Signet Classics paperback books
