In Robyn Horn's thirty years as a wood sculptor her work has evolved from small lathe-turned objects to ten-foot-high redwood compositions like her Already Set in Motion #1170 which graces a garden at the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art. In creating these forms that rise from the earth at improbable angles Horns primary tool is the chainsaw and yet a tenderness for her medium reveals itself in the delicate balance of planes that allows her sculptures to both loom and flow visually indicating that they are precarious when in fact they are sturdy.0The essays and images in The Sculpture of Robyn Horn sketch the industrious career of this Little Rock Arkansas-based sculptor illuminating her attention to geometry physics and the philosophy of design and exploring the context and origin of the various seriesGeodes Millstones Standing Stones and Slipping Stones among othersthat characterize her body of work.--WorldCat. "Manju netsuke have never been the subject of a book on netsuke. Many books ignore them completely and it is hoped that this catalogue will throw light on the differences between the manju and other better-known types of netsuke. Dr. Barnett was one of a handful of collectors of one particular type of netsuke the manju. These were not widely appreciated until about ten years ago when interest began to increase and the exquisite workmanship and design of this group of carvers was noticed as an art in its own right and one which presents the artist with a challenge completely different from the more popular katabori netsuke carved in the round. Dr. Barnett continued to collect until just before her death in 2000 by which time she had acquired some of the finest pieces to be sold over 30 years which will be presented in this book. Manju netsuke have played a small part in the many publications on netsuke but there has never been a catalogue entirely devoted to the subject. The book aims to provide a description of each object and to explain the tales they illustrate and the sources of these tales from literature and printed picture books. The range of subjects is wide and includes religious images scenes from festivals the theatre historical incidents folktales classical literature and themes from nature."--Publisher's description. "Fully illustrated with photographs and drawings A Bearer of Tradition not only tells the story of one basketmaker's life - his values hopes and disappointments - but also explains the basketmaking process: the arduous search for just the right type of oak tree the demanding physical labor invovled in pulling the round rods and the final step of the weaving itself. Through her transcripts of many years of tape-recorded sessions Joyce allows Dwight Stump to tell his own story from the loss of his mother at an early age to his disappointment at exhausting the local education system after the eight grade through his years of financial struggle when he worked at an astonishing variety of jobs including employment as a farm laborer carpenter timber cutter sawmiller candy vendor cook well-digger constable Sunday school superintendent factory worker and plumber. The basketmaking was only a small part of his income until his years in retirement when he has been able to devote full time to his baskets and other traditional pursuits: herb-gathering collecting Indian artifacts 'water smelling' dowsing and crafting sisal rugs and canes." - dust jacket description.
