1930ref. 245437Paris: Shakespeare and Company 1930. possible Eighth-Eleventh printing. Three-quarter red crushed morocco over red pebbled cloth gilt rules and spine-title plain endpapers. Page edges toned small stain upper text block edge light rubbing joints two spots heavy browning and subsequent acidic translucency from tape repairs to part-title not affecting inscription minor penciled marginalia p. 135-149 overall a very good copy. 3-735 1 blank. Lacking all prelims and title pages. A CONTRABAND ULYSSES. Paris August 1931. Twenty-three-year-old Olive Felt is preparing to return to America after a post-graduate stint studying French at the Sorbonne. Before leaving she secures an inscription for her copy of the then-banned Ulysses from the woman who first published it: "for Olive Felt / Sylvia Beach / Paris August 1931." On August 28 she sails from Le Havre aboard the Lafayette arriving in New York on September 5-almost certainly with her newly inscribed copy of Ulysses tucked in her luggage. Possibly traveling unbound its identifying preliminaries removed Beach's inscription tucked onto the blank verso of the surviving part-title-a book stripped of its most conspicuous declarations of identity ready to cross a border where its admission remained forbidden. The surviving evidence suggests a compelling narrative. The inscription and passenger manifest place Beach's signing and Olive's departure within the same month more than two years before Judge Woolsey's decision of December 6 1933 permitted the novel's admission. The missing preliminaries and unusual inscription placement are consistent with a copy prepared for discreet passage although the circumstances of their removal remain undocumented. Now bound in three-quarter red morocco over red pebbled cloth the volume bears Olive's bookplate under her subsequent married name Olive Felt Kennedy and was acquired directly from her daughter. Whether carried openly or concealed in her luggage it preserves an intimate connection to the years when reading Joyce could require a journey-and bringing him home could require ingenuity. Copies of Ulysses inscribed by Beach are exceptionally scarce. Here her dated inscription the recipient's documented transatlantic passage the suggestive removal of the preliminaries and the volume's descent through her family give this copy particular resonance as a possible witness to the novel's clandestine circulation. A very good and extremely intriguing early printing eighth - eleventh printing based on collation and pagination. Slocum & Cahoon A.17. [Shakespeare and Company] unknown

ref. B9781509977390Paperback / softback. New. Can the EU be held legally responsible for its contributions to human rights harms in its Integrated Border Management policy Or do systemic legal design flaws in the EU's human rights responsibility regime give rise to a significant responsibility gap This book delves into these pressing questions offering a transversal analysis of applicable legal frameworks under international and EU law. Divided into three parts the book first analyses the international and EU human rights responsibility frameworks revealing both ‘normative incongruency’ as well as ‘liability incongruency’. Part two applies these frameworks to specific illustrations within the four tiers of the EU’s Integrated Border Management exposing the critical points where responsibility falters. Building on these findings and drawing from shared responsibility and relationality theories part three briefly introduces 'Relational Human Rights Responsibility' as an alternative method to ascertaining human rights responsibility of the EU specifically and international organisations more generally. paperback

ref. A9798895309711Hardback. New. Ancient Mexico the Aztec city of Tenochtitlan built upon an island situated in a great highland lake the scene of the almost incredible exploits of Cortés has long been familiar as a name to the western world. The story of the fall of Aztec civilization before the Spanish invaders has deservedly won a great hold upon popular imagination. Moreover the existence of Aztec civilization an organized empire with cities built of stone and rich in gold and gems burst upon the Old World as a thing almost beyond belief. The purpose of the present work is to afford some connected account of this pre-Spanish culture and to correlate the accounts of eyewitnesses and early visitors with the material remains which the investigations of later times have revealed. But in order to obtain a proper view of Mexican culture it is necessary to transcend the limits of Mexico itself. In the country to the south and east in Guatemala and northern Honduras are the remains of ruined buildings which are both architecturally and artistically superior to those of Mexico proper and which had been deserted before the coming of the Spaniards. These were the work of the Maya a people whose name is far less familiar to the general public than that of the Aztec but who evolved a culture of their own when the Aztec were yet primitive nomadic hunters and who furnished the latter people with the materials for that civilization which so astonished the followers of Cortés. hardcover
