1936Best.-Nr. 21246351936. London: John Lane the Bodley Head. 1936. Tall 8vo. Original green linen buckram lettered in gilt to spine Eric Gill's Homeric bow illustration in gilt to upper board top edge gilt other edges untrimmed; pp. xiii 3 765 3; cloth discoloured especially at extremities and stained spine sunned extremities and text block rubbed; light foxing internally but generally clean; a good copy.First UK edition no. 341 of 900 copies on japon vellum paper bound in linen buckram from a total edition of 1000.The Bodley Head edition of Ulysses the first published in the United Kingdom includes the first Joyce bibliography as well as appendices concerning the obscenity case that had kept the work from British printers. Unsurprisingly for a book with such a chequered publication history there are a number of typographical differences from earlier editions. Despite Joyce correcting the proofs while on holiday in Copenhagen in early 1936 several mistakes were later spotted. The bibliography by Peter Pertzoff had been submitted without further corrections or acknowledgment from Joyce. Pertzoff was apparently surprised to see it appear inaccuracies and all in this edition. The typography and design was overseen by Allen Lane and Joyce's representative Paul Leon. Eric Gill was commissioned to design the binding of this edition with its iconic Homeric bow on the upper board.Slocum & Cahoon A23. hardcover

1968Best.-Nr. 21190191968. New York: The Viking Press. 1968. 8vo. Quarter red cloth over grey boards spine lettered in gilt; title sticker to upper board; housed in the original grey slipcase title sticker to upper panel; pp. xx; 16; xxvii; with leaves of plates after the original manuscript and folding facsimile plates; light sunning to spine of cloth; light rubbing and sunning to slipcase; a few small marks to endpapers; near fine. First edition. This short autobiographical piece provides an interesting insight into Joyce's early literary style offering a glimpse into his early stages of writing development years before his epics Ulysses and Finnegans Wake. The text itself exemplifies Joyce's literary experimentations and interest in the stream-of-consciousness technique which is later explored extensively in other texts to discuss themes of love and desire. Written in Trieste in 1914 this later publication includes an introduction by Richard Ellmann exerpts taken from Joyce's textbooks as well as facsimile plates from the notebook pages four of which being full full-scale facsimile pages from the manuscript. hardcover
