1934ref. 9192New York: Random House 1934. Hard Cover. Very Good binding. Octavo. xvii 1 767 1 pp. First authorized American edition first printing. As issued in publisher's linen with title in black and red; lacking the dust jacket as usual. A better copy than often found with the typical soiling to the light colored binding but less than usual and without any notable wear; bookseller's ticket on the front pastedown; contents clean. A very good copy of a book not often thus. John J. Slocum in his bibliography of James Joyce notes that the first authorized American edition after a 1927 pirated edition was issued in January of 1934. While Slocum refers to the first 100 copies off the press in order to secure copyright shortly after the Woolsey decision as the "first printing" and the subsequent 10300 copies as the "second printing" it is widely considered that these were not distinct printings but a pause in printing while securing copyright in as timely a manner as possible. Ellmann writes of this in his biography of Joyce noting that the first 100 off the press came in January and the balance in February once copyright was secured p. 667. Bibliographers note no way to distinguish between the first 100 and the final 10300. This is one of those from the first printing. Random House noted the printing on subsequent issues from the press. ref. 37462Riverside CA: Bo Press Miniature Books n.d. Hardcover. Fine. Hardcover. A charming miniature book from this well-known private press. Pat Sweet is noted for her many and varied miniature books and objects. This poem is an Irish ballad written by Robert Dwyer Joyce 1836-1883 a Limerick-born poet. The poem first published in 1861 tells the story of an Irish rebel from County Wexford who leaves his lover behind to help fight against British colonial rule. The growth of the barley crop every year in the spring is said to symbolize Irish resistance to British oppression. "I sat within a valley green I sat there with my true love My sad heart strove the two between The old love and the new love - The old for her the new that made Me think of Ireland dearly While soft the wind blew down the glade And shook the golden barley." With several illustrations of barley. Printed and bound in Mohawk Superfine paper with a white dust jacket of the same paper. In fine condition. Measures 2 x 3 inches. Unpaginated 34 pages. 1927ref. RJOYULY00tpmShakespeare and Co. Samuel Roth 1927 1929. Good. Joyce James. Ulysses. Paris NY: Shakespeare and Co. Samuel Roth 1927 1929. Unauthorized 1st U.S. printing. 735pp. 8vo. Greek blue wraps and deckle edges. Book condition: Good with bumped and chipped edges creased and cracked spine and faint soiling. An elusive copy of Joyce's Ulysses. Unauthorized printed and discreetly distributed by Samuel Roth in New York City and Philidelphia six years before before Ulysses' ban would be lifted in the U.S. Although Roth had formerly published Ulysses' serially in Two Worlds Monthly these full length copies made to pass as Shakespeare and Co.'s ninth printing would ulitmately place Roth in jail. Despite its disreputation it is nevertheless held by several special collections across the U.S. and is an essential character in the history of Ulysses and banned books in 20th century America.
