A Modern Fine Press Interpretation of a Modernist Masterpiece A beautifully realized late 20th-century fine press edition of Ulysses pairing Joyce's monumental text with the bold symbolic visual language of Mimmo Paladino. The etchings - printed in striking combinations of gold and black - offer a contemporary artistic response to Joyce's dense and allusive narrative. Mimmo Paladino born in Paduli on 18 December 1948 is an Italian sculptor painter and printmaker. He is a leading name in the Transvanguardia artistic movement and one of the many European artists to revive Expressionism in the 1980s. Jeff Clements MBE was born in 1934 and died in 2020. He was one of the leading figures in modern British bookbinding and design closely associated with the The Folio Society for whom he created a number of distinguished bindings. The production reflects the Folio Society's highest standards: luxurious materials careful typography and an emphasis on the book as an object of art. The full goatskin binding and solander case place this edition firmly within the tradition of modern private press craftsmanship. London: The Folio Society, 1998 unknown

2008réf. 91460Maryknoll NY: Orbis Books 2008. Presumed First Edition First Printing. Hardcover. Very good/Very good. Alan Marker Cover photograph. xiv 177 1 pages. Illustrations. Notes. Author signed sentiment on the title page reads: "For peace Anne Morrison Welsh". Norman Morrison 1933-1965 became interested in the religious ideals and principles of the Society of Friends while studying in Scotland. In 1962. As a convinced Friend he became the Executive Secretary of the Baltimore Monthly Meeting. Morrison was distraught as the pace of U.S military involvement and the bombing of civilians in Vietnam escalated; he chose to immolate himself in front of the Pentagon on November 2 1965. His was one of only three such deaths in the United States though many Buddhist monks in Vietnam used self-immolation as religious witness to attempt to end the war. In a letter he mailed to Welsh Morrison reassured her of the faith in his act. "Know that I love thee . but I must go to help the children of the priest's village". McNamara described Morrison's death as "a tragedy not only for his family but also for me and the country. It was an outcry against the killing that was destroying the lives of so many Vietnamese and American youth." He was survived by Anne Welsh and three children Ben who died of cancer in 1976 Christina and Emily. Anne Morrison Welsh was a lifelong peace activist writer and public speaker who dedicated her life to reconciling the generational trauma of her first husband's radical anti-war protest. Joyce Hollyday is an accomplished journalist author activist and minister who collaborated with Welsh to give the memoir its profound literary structure. One day in November 1965 Norman Morrison a devout Quaker immolated himself on the steps of the Pentagon as a protest against the Vietnam War. It was a terrible and defining moment of an era one that marked the lives of many people - not least Morrison's own family who were left struggling to understand his action and to pick up the pieces of their lives. This searing memoir by his widow Anne Morrison Welsh recounts Norman's story as well as her own journey over a lifetime to find acceptance forgiveness and recovery from life's wounds. While many were appalled by Morrison's action others were deeply affected - among them Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara who later described Morrison's death as one of the critical turning points in his life. Decades later on a pilgrimage to Vietnam Anne and her children completed a circle that brought them to terms in a new way with the mystery and meaning of that day in November. Orbis Books hardcover
