The books were gifts from Leonora Curtin Paloheimo and had been commissioned directly from the artists in 1877 by Paloheimos grandmother Eva Scott Muse Fényes 1849 1930. At the time Fényes commissioned the books Zotom and Howling Wolf were imprisoned at Fort Marion in Saint Augustine Florida. Like some of the other Southern Plains Indian prisoners held there between mid-1875 and mid-1878 the two men created many drawings for diverse reasons. Some of the prisoners books of drawings including the two that Fényes collected were sold to people who visited the sixteenth-century Spanish fort. After Eva Scott Fényes's death the books went to her daughter Leonora Muse Curtin 1879 1972 and subsequently they were passed to Leonora Curtin Paloheimo 1903 1999. More than one hundred years after their creation the books became part of the Southwest Museum's collections. Unlike most of the museum's other holdings of Native American art these two books originated with a commission by Fényes a young woman who continued as a patron of the arts for the remainder of her life. The study of what has become known as Plains Indian ledger art because the artists frequently used accountants ledger books as sources of paper and of Fort Marion drawings in particular has burgeoned in the last forty years. Joyce Szabo's examination of the two drawing books by Zotom and Howling Wolf encompasses their origins and the issues surrounding their commission as well as what the images say about their creators and their collector. Szabo augments the complete reproduction of each page with detail photographs of the drawings. . 2011. 1934691453 . SAR Press hardcover

Now a leading authority on American Indian drawings and paintings examines an important collection of these drawings to reveal how art blossomed at Fort Marion. The Silberman Collection is an unusually complete group of images that illustrate the artists' fascination with the world outside the southern plains their living conditions and survival strategies as prisoners and their reminiscences of pre-reservation life. Joyce M. Szabo explains the significance of this preeminent collection which focuses on seven of the prisoner-artists--most notably Zotom and Making Medicine. Through a selection of 120 striking color images Szabo shows how each artist creatively recorded his experiences. . 2008. 0806138831 . University of Oklahoma Press hardcover

This is the first book to consider Kozloff's work since the late 1990s within the broader context of her career and the history of map-related art. Charting her influential contribution to the Pattern and Decoration movement--which was an integral part of the downtown New York art scene of the 1970s--the volume also explores Kozloff's later large-scale public artworks. Fifty full-color photo spreads are dedicated to key projects--Targets Boys' Art American History and Voyages--and accompanied by an essay by critic Nancy Princenthal and an interview with the artist. Joyce Kozloff is a founding member of the Pattern and Decoration movement and the Heresies collective and is a primary figure in the feminist art world. . 2008. 0976848880 . D. A. 2008ref. 84170University of Washington Press. New. Hardcover. FREE UPGRADE to Courier/Priority Shipping Upon Request - IN STOCK AND IMMEDIATELY AVAILABLE FOR SHIPMENT - Flawless copy brand new pristine never opened -- xvii 1 228 pages 70 illustrations; 4to. -- with a bonus offer--; In this generously illustrated volume the distinguished teacher author and critic Joyce Brodsky brings together works by the expatriate Chinese painter Yun Gee and his Chinese American daughter Li-lan exploring connections between each artist's life and paintings. Yun Gee 1906-1963 was born in China emigrated as a young man to San Francisco and after living there and in Paris spent the latter part of his life in New York City. Li-lan was born in New York to Yun Gee and Helen Wimmer Gee. She still lives and works in and near the city of her birth but has also spent long periods in Japan and more recently in China. Father and daughter alike exemplify the desire to live and work in freedom from the restrictions of national identity a choice that permits openness to different cultures. For Yun Gee and Li-lan this openness was never a reflection of trends in the art world but was an element of life itself fully embraced and therefore embodied in each artist's paintings. Both artists can be understood as cosmopolitan and transnational figures - citizens in Homi Bhabha's terms of contemporary culture's "middle passage." This book then although not primarily theoretical is informed by ideas of hybridity transnationalism and cosmopolitanism. As artists who have embraced multinational multicultural and multiracial experiences Yun Gee and Li-lan have combined those experiences intrinsically sometimes in spite of the pain that such a complex passage may entail. Li-lan was exposed to Yun Gee's paintings and his cultural sophistication when she was a child and this exposure was crucial to her artistic being. In turn she has broadened and deepened the audience for her father's art through her archival work her conservation of and her efforts to encourage exhibitions of his work. . 2008. 0295987758 . FREE UPGRADE to Courier/Priority Shipping Upon Request - IN STOCK AND IMMEDIATELY AVAILABLE FOR SHIPMENT - Flawless copy brand new pristine never opened -- 148 pp. ; 65 images. -- with a bonus offer--; In his book "A Lover's Discourse" Roland Barthes attempted to theorize the language used by lovers to describe each other. It is arguably a text about loneliness suggesting that even romantic language confesses the distance that always exists between people: if we could achieve perfect unity with others language would not be necessary. This catalogue documents an exhibition about how "couples" discourse - about the ways in which artists cope with the social connections and practicalities of being artists in a couple. It is about the commonalities as well as the differences the intimacies as well as the public articulations - in other words the negotiations that are required in any relationship. It might be a truism to say that the very notion of "the couple" is undergoing significant transformation at the moment. Legal changes now allow many same-sex marriages in the United States even as increasing numbers of people both gay and straight choose to enjoy unions and family structures beyond such conventional forms. Now is of course the perfect time to investigate more carefully the ways in which artists construct and articulate their positions as "couples." . 2006. 0911209654 . His work has been shown at the Tate the Hirschorn the Getty and other important institutions. Several of the 28 works in this slim paperback catalog from the Santa Barbara Museum of Art use stop motion photography and slow-motion film to render a prolonged moment of suspense. With Gersht's trademark references to historic paintings these remarkable photo/film works provide a meditation on life loss destiny and chance. In one series Gersht recreates a flower arrangement from a work of Jacques-Louis David which he then freezes with nitrogen and blows up capturing the action in vivid detail at 1/6000 of a second. This meticulously printed color catalog does justice to these complex works. . 2011. 0899511120 . Museum paperback
