1945réf. D7489likely Germany 1945. Paperback. Very Good. Heavy cardstock leaves oblong 325 x 250 mm bound with thin blue rope tassled along spine; pp. 54 with text handwritten in black ink in German and English with original illustrations in ink or ink and gouache both in text and full-page. Created from 32 leaves some of them glued together along the edges creating a new page when the author/illustrator wanted to change her lay-out text or illustration -- these have since become detached offering an interesting look at the author's creative process. Binding broken and leaves loose but in excellent condition suitable for display. The artwork is extraordinary -- showing cute little chicks as their adventure takes them from fields full of flowers to lakes brimming with colorful fish. It tells a story of 3 little chicks who find a mysterious blue egg which they are told not to play with but they do and learn some valuable lessons from the consequences. Though little is known about the author she appears in a tiny b/w photograph on the ultimate full-page illustration. More of her unrelated artwork is laid-in at rear including pastels of trees floral arrangements in gouache -- lovely suitable for framing. paperback

1804réf. AQ21202Cambridge: Printed by and for B. Flower 1804. 324pp. Modern morocco-backed marbled boards gilt. Slightly rubbed to extremities occasional marking else a crisp unpressed and generously margined copy displaying several untrimmed fore-edges and some marginal paper flaws. With occasional neat early underlining of key passages suggesting a close reading a handful of single-word manuscript translations into French early ink-stamps of Wm. McKendrick to early blank preceding title and following leaf and later ink inscription to modern blank fly. The second edition of the first work of economics in English consciously intended to be used as a textbook: as the author himself notes in a preliminary 'advertisement' the work was to be 'found convenient as a text book in those institutions of liberal education in which the "Wealth of Nations" makes an essential branch of their letters'. A lucid abridgement by English radical Jeremiah Joyce 1763-1816 of Scottish philosopher Adam Smith's monumental Wealth of nations it condensed the two thick quartos of the original edition London 1776 or the by then well known bulky triple-decker octavo editions of the late eighteenth century into a single convenient octavo volume. The photos reveal hazing rituals sporting events dances theatre productions as well as an extended ski trip to Mt. Rainier with photos of skiers ski jumping and the members at the time. Of particular interest is the group of 12 photographs showing the opening night of Disney’s Snow White at the Fox Theatre in downtown Centralia hosted by the Men’s Club with the organizers in costume and photos taken during the running of the film and carefully mounted in sequence inside the yearbook. Founded in 1925Centralia Junior College began with 15 students and 6 instructors with not tuition and by 1929 the enrollment had expanded to 133 students and offered courses in many areas but as a result of the Great Depression enrollment plunged and the college nearly bankrupt because the banks had failed. Dean Margaret Corbet asked each of the staff members what they could survive on and business leaders in Centralia acted as loan guarantors to keep the College scraping by for a few years.
