1979Best.-Nr. 5502Southport United Kingdom: Joyce Publications 1979. First Edition. hardcover. Very Good. Enid Filshee. Publication: Southport Joyce Publications 1979 Formatting: 8vo pagination unstated. Condition Report: Very Good. The volume presents excellently in its original textured burgundy cloth with the gilt titling to the spine remaining bright and unoxidised. The boards are sharp and solid completely avoiding notable shelf-wear or bumping to the corners while the binding remains tight and square. Internally the text block is bright crisp and entirely free from foxing dampstaining or stray markings. The original dust jacket retains vibrant unfaded colours on the front panel but exhibits minor edge-wear a few light surface rubs and gentle bumping to the spine ends. An attractive well-preserved copy of a scarce regional title. Catalogue Note: First Edition. Independently published by the author under Joyce Publications and filmset by Lowes Limited at the West Lancashire Press this novel is a highly localized piece of literature. The striking dust jacket features a cover illustration by Enid Filshee depicting the town's eponymous real-life historical bellman Peter Ball. True first editions of this locally printed work are highly scarce on the open market particularly when retaining their original dust jackets in such a collectible well-preserved state. Set against the backdrop of an expanding 19th-century coastal resort Peter the Bellman weaves a vivid historical romance anchored in the true origins of Southport between 1820 and 1860. The narrative brings to life the vibrant character of Peter Ball the town's legendary first town crier whose booming voice and broad accent once guided the daily affairs of the embryonic village. Through meticulous local history and rich storytelling Alan Joyce captures a fascinating world in transition from traditional handloom weaving to a bustling Victorian destination.
