Ladner's pioneering sociological study of urban Black girlhood comes from the library of the late influential Jewish lesbian feminist theorist activist and scholar Dr. Bette S. Tallen 1950-2023. "Joyce A. Ladner spent four years interviewing observing and socializing with more than a hundred girls living in the Pruitt-Igoe housing project in St. Louis. She was challenged by preconceived academic ideas and labels and by her own past as a black child in rural Mississippi. Rejecting the white middle-class perspective of "deviant" behavior she examined the expectations and aspirations of these representative black girls and their feelings about parents and boyfriends marriage pregnancy and child-rearing. According to Ladner 'The total misrepresentation of the Black community and the various myths which surround it can be seen in microcosm in the Black female adolescent.'" - University of Nebraska Press Ex-Ramapo College of New Jersey Library with associated label to spine and occasional stamps to pages. 8 1/2" X 5 3/4". xxvi 304pp. Moderate wear to price-clipped dust jacket with library label to spine bumping to head and tail of spine heaving toning to flaps and library stamp to top edge of text block. Green boards with gilt text and design black text black cloth spine with gilt text. 61 pp. Color illustrations. Sticky note inside cover says "Love Joyce" Whether it was waged at Pitcairn Island Nagasaki or the Falkland Islands whether during the Han Dynasty the English Empire or the Cold War battles have been fought people slaughtered women raped children orphaned and so on as the pages of history turn. The current world situation in the very first years of the twenty-first century is certainly no exception. The visual residue of these battles changes over time growing more and more dense more and more immediate. But always there have been maps detailed cartographic evidence of what was known what was planned what was going to happen. For over a dozen years Joyce Kozloff has centered her art on the theme of cartography blending into her simulacra of old maps mutations that often raise geopolitical issues. She discovered in these images of physical terrain a mental territory as well--one that charts the topography of power. Boys' Art is a series of meticulous densely collaged maps that Kozloff has fashioned from hundreds of years of source material the most recent of which are her son Nik's childhood drawings of war. On top of her pristine pencil copies of historic military maps--culled from the Han dynasty to the Roosevelt administration--Kozloff has layered the movements of war as found in Tin Tin and Babar in a seventeenth-century woodblock by Hokusai in a George Grosz pen and ink drawing or a Leonardo da Vinci sketch. Surreal narratives emerge pitting cartoon elephants against samurai warriors scribbled monsters against Indians on horseback and Renaissance soldiers against Frenchmen in khaki fatigues and pith helmets. Presented in an oversize format at a 1:1 scale with the original collages Boys' Art lushly presents a series of work that unfortunately could not be more timely. But then as Kozloff herself writes in the introduction there has always been war. Distributed Art Publications hardcover books

2011réf. 29506Oakland and Chicago: PM Press / Charles H. Kerr Publishing Company; Merlin 2011. Reprint. Paperback. New. 447pp. Octavo 25.5 cm. Illustrated wraps. From the publisher: "Welcoming women Blacks and immigrants long before most other unions the Wobblies from the start were labor’s outstanding pioneers and innovators unionizing hundreds of thousands of workers previously regarded as “unorganizable.” Wobblies organized the first sit-down strike at General Electric Schenectady 1906 the first major auto strike 6000 Studebaker workers Detroit 1911 the first strike to shut down all three coalfields in Colorado 1927 and the first “no-fare” transit-workers’ job-action Cleveland 1944. With their imaginative colorful and world-famous strikes and free-speech fights the IWW wrote many of the brightest pages in the annals of working class emancipation. Wobblies also made immense and invaluable contributions to workers’ culture. All but a few of America’s most popular labor songs are Wobbly songs. IWW cartoons have long been recognized as labor’s finest and funniest. The impact of the IWW has reverberated far beyond the ranks of organized labor. An important influence on the 1960s New Left the Wobbly theory and practice of direct action solidarity and “class-war” humor have inspired several generations of civil rights and antiwar activists and are a major source of ideas and inspiration for today’s radicals. Indeed virtually every movement seeking to “make this planet a good place to live” to quote an old Wobbly slogan has drawn on the IWW’s incomparable experience. Originally published in 1964 and long out of print Rebel Voices remains by far the biggest and best source on IWW history fiction songs art and lore. This new edition includes 40 pages of additional material from the 1998 Charles H. Kerr edition from Fred Thompson and Franklin Rosemont and a new preface by Wobbly organizer Daniel Gross.
