With a foreword by John Banville. Publisher's quarter blue morocco over navy cloth boards smooth spine with silver lettering. In a blue buckram slipcase. In mint condition. This is the first printing of Joyce's masterpiece actually to be done in Ireland--75 years after its initial publication. Generally recognized as the most important 20th-century novel in English Joyce's chronicle of Leopold Bloom's odyssey through Dublin excited much controversy upon publication in 1922 and was for years a target of censorship especially in the U.S. and U.K. The present edition also met with some animosity when it was discovered that the editor prominent Joyce scholar Danis Rose used some language from the original manuscripts without permission from Joyce's estate. A lawsuit for copyright infringement was issued and this work subsequently became known as the "Illegal Edition." Despite the unpleasant dispute Rose's "Ulysses" was lauded for its readability and was described by the Irish Times as "a landmark edition for first-time readers and life-time fans." Founded in 1984 and still in operation today the Lilliput Press has published more than 600 titles of Irish interest and is regarded as one of Ireland's most esteemed small publishers. This strictly limited edition of 100 rarely appears for sale: we could trace just one auction appearance at PBA Galleries in 2005 where a copy was sold for $1495 all in. Lilliput Press unknown
1927rif. 2020144Paris: Shakespeare And Company 1927. Ninth Printing. Hardcover. fine. Octavo 738 pages later half green morocco green cloth pastel endpapers; bound by N. Papapetrum Chicago IL; ex libris Ary John Arlon M.D. "Bloom is a universal comic character like Falstaff Daedalus is guilty adolescence - Connolly THE MODERN MOVEMENT 42." The book was sold to subscribers including Winston Churchill. "The most famous rejection came from George Bernard Shaw who claimed ULYSSES was 'a revolting record of a disgusting phase of civilization' and that no Irishman would ever pay 150 francs for this book or any other." Joyce continuously revised the book throughout the typesetting of the first printing. As a result of his revisions and French printers setting a book in English many mistakes crept into the text for which corrections were attempted again and again in subsequent printings. In fact arguably the author's finished text has yet to be published despite the so-called Definitive Edition published in 1996."ULYSSES was printed for Shakespeare and Company eleven times - Slocum & Cahoon 17." The U. S. " government based its case against the novel on the dual grounds of Joyce's use of Anglo-Saxon four-letter words and the erotic passages in Mollie Bloom's monologue. No one who has read ULYSSES could deny that Joyce reproduced the coarse language of Dublin's streets with a fidelity never before rendered in literature." - Alfred Haworth Jones. rif. 17059Dijon France: Maurice Darantiere The is a curious First Edition copy of James Joyces's ULYSSES. The book is lacking the preliminary pages title page copyright and starts with the famous 1st text page: " Stately plump Buck Mulligan came from the stairhead. the pagination ends on pages 732 with Trieste-Zuerich-Paris 1914 - 1921. Followed by " Ulysses Additional Corrections" on pages 734 - 736 and printers information at the bottom of page 736 : PRINTED FOR SYLVIA BEACH BY MAUCRICE DARANTIERE AT DIJON FRANCE. Plain carboard covers with linen-taped spine and lettering Joyce Ulysses. Lacking the famous blue papcovers for the wrappers. According to Slcum & Calhoun :"The fourth fifthe and sixth printings were issued in white covers with the title and author printed in blue on the front cover and spine. The fourth and fifth were printed on thick paper of inferior quality and had Price: Sixty Francs printed on the back cover. In the fourth fifth and sixth printings the text was corrected for the errata which had been issued with the second and third printings but more typographical errors which had been discovered were listed as Ulysses Additional corrections and included in the regular pagination pp. 733-736. The seventh printing issued in blue covers with title and author in white also contained these From this information it would appear that the presence of the "Additional corrections" would indicate a later printing it could be 4th 5th 6th or 7th.corrections.
