1924réf. 0105979Shakespeare and Company 1924. 4th Edition. Soft cover. Good. 4th Printing of James Joyce's Ulysses Published in Paris in 1924 by Shakespeare and Company. This is the 4th printing and only the second printing by Shakespeare and Company the 1st printing was by Shakespeare and Co. but the 2nd and 3rd printings were done in the UK by a different publisher the Egoist Press. One of the earliest obtainable printings after the first due to the fact that many copies of the second and third printings both by the Egoist Press were destroyed by English and American authorities. Extremely fragile and in poor condition with covers and many pages detached. Spine missing. It is rare to find such an early printing in the original wrappers that has not be hideously rebound and therefore one that looks and feels much more like the original publication. But the paper is dry and brittle and flakes easily upon handling. Shakespeare and Company unknown

réf. 17059Dijon France: Maurice Darantiere The is a curious First Edition copy of James Joyces's ULYSSES. The book is lacking the preliminary pages title page copyright and starts with the famous 1st text page: " Stately plump Buck Mulligan came from the stairhead. the pagination ends on pages 732 with Trieste-Zuerich-Paris 1914 - 1921. Followed by " Ulysses Additional Corrections" on pages 734 - 736 and printers information at the bottom of page 736 : PRINTED FOR SYLVIA BEACH BY MAUCRICE DARANTIERE AT DIJON FRANCE. Plain carboard covers with linen-taped spine and lettering Joyce Ulysses. Lacking the famous blue papcovers for the wrappers. According to Slcum & Calhoun :"The fourth fifthe and sixth printings were issued in white covers with the title and author printed in blue on the front cover and spine. The fourth and fifth were printed on thick paper of inferior quality and had Price: Sixty Francs printed on the back cover. In the fourth fifth and sixth printings the text was corrected for the errata which had been issued with the second and third printings but more typographical errors which had been discovered were listed as Ulysses Additional corrections and included in the regular pagination pp. 733-736. The seventh printing issued in blue covers with title and author in white also contained these From this information it would appear that the presence of the "Additional corrections" would indicate a later printing it could be 4th 5th 6th or 7th.corrections. 1934réf. 24133USA: Random House 1934. First authorised American edition first printing with "First American Edition" stated on the copyright page and no indication of a subsequent printing. Thick octavo measuring approximately 21 × 14 cm. xvii 2 5768 pp. Publisher's original beige cloth lettered in black and red with dark-brown top edge in the original typographical dust wrapper designed by Ernst Reichl. This copy retains the particularly desirable Reichl-signed variant of the dust wrapper with the designer's surname printed vertically at the lower-right corner of the front panel. Two variants of the wrapper are known one bearing Reichl's name and the other without it. Although no conclusive bibliographical priority has been established the signed variant is generally preferred by collectors and commands a premium. The first authorised edition of Joyce's modernist masterpiece to be published in the United States appearing twelve years after the Shakespeare and Company first edition of 1922. The novel had long been prohibited from importation into America on grounds of obscenity. Random House deliberately arranged for a copy to be seized by US Customs in order to test the ban in court culminating in Judge John M. Woolsey's landmark 1933 ruling that Ulysses was not obscene and could legally be admitted and published in the United States. This edition includes a foreword by Morris L. Ernst concerning the historic judgment together with Joyce's letter to Random House publisher Bennett Cerf expressing his desire for an authorised American edition. Ernst Reichl's striking typographical treatment of the binding wrapper and text has subsequently become recognised as a landmark of twentieth-century American book design. The price-clipped dust wrapper is slightly toned to the spine with a little chipping and areas of wear to the extremities. Some spotting to the cloth boards and minor toning internally. A very good copy in the very good original dust wrapper. Random House hardcover
