No. 3 OF 100 SPECIAL COPIES of the "Illegal" First Dublin Edition bound in quarter leather and signed by Rose and Banville from a total edition of 1000 numbered and 26 lettered copies. 240 x 158 mm. 9 1/2 x 6 1/4". 4 p.l. v-lxxxiii 1 739 3 pp.Edited by Danis Rose. With a foreword by John Banville. Publisher's quarter blue morocco over navy cloth boards smooth spine with silver lettering. In a blue buckram slipcase. In mint condition. This is the first printing of Joyce's masterpiece actually to be done in Ireland--75 years after its initial publication. Generally recognized as the most important 20th-century novel in English Joyce's chronicle of Leopold Bloom's odyssey through Dublin excited much controversy upon publication in 1922 and was for years a target of censorship especially in the U.S. and U.K. The present edition also met with some animosity when it was discovered that the editor prominent Joyce scholar Danis Rose used some language from the original manuscripts without permission from Joyce's estate. A lawsuit for copyright infringement was issued and this work subsequently became known as the "Illegal Edition." Despite the unpleasant dispute Rose's "Ulysses" was lauded for its readability and was described by the Irish Times as "a landmark edition for first-time readers and life-time fans." Founded in 1984 and still in operation today the Lilliput Press has published more than 600 titles of Irish interest and is regarded as one of Ireland's most esteemed small publishers. This strictly limited edition of 100 rarely appears for sale: we could trace just one auction appearance at PBA Galleries in 2005 where a copy was sold for $1495 all in. Lilliput Press unknown books

1924ref. 0105979Shakespeare and Company 1924. 4th Edition. Soft cover. Good. 4th Printing of James Joyce's Ulysses Published in Paris in 1924 by Shakespeare and Company. This is the 4th printing and only the second printing by Shakespeare and Company the 1st printing was by Shakespeare and Co. but the 2nd and 3rd printings were done in the UK by a different publisher the Egoist Press. One of the earliest obtainable printings after the first due to the fact that many copies of the second and third printings both by the Egoist Press were destroyed by English and American authorities. Extremely fragile and in poor condition with covers and many pages detached. Spine missing. It is rare to find such an early printing in the original wrappers that has not be hideously rebound and therefore one that looks and feels much more like the original publication. But the paper is dry and brittle and flakes easily upon handling. Shakespeare and Company unknown books

"Ulysses is a novel by James Joyce first serialized in parts in the American journal The Little Review from March 1918 to December 1920 then published in its entirety by Sylvia Beach on February 2 1922 in Paris. Many consider it one of the most important works of Modernist literature. Ulysses chronicles the passage of Leopold Bloom through Dublin during an ordinary day June 16 1904. The title parallels and alludes to Odysseus Latinised into Ulysses the hero of Homer's Odyssey e.g. the correspondences between Leopold Bloom and Odysseus Molly Bloom and Penelope and Stephen Dedalus and Telemachus. Joyce fans worldwide now celebrate June 16 as Bloomsday. Ulysses totals about 265000 words from a vocabulary of 30030 words including proper names plurals and various verb tenses divided into 18 'episodes'. Since publication the book attracted controversy and scrutiny ranging from early obscenity trials to protracted textual 'Joyce Wars.' Ulysses' stream-of-consciousness technique careful structuring and experimental prose - full of puns parodies and allusions - as well as its rich characterisations and broad humour made the book a highly regarded novel in the Modernist pantheon. In 1999 the Modern Library ranked Ulysses first on its list of the 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century. Vintage Books / Penguin Random House LLC paperback books

He is a leading name in the Transvanguardia artistic movement and one of the many European artists to revive Expressionism in the 1980s. Jeff Clements MBE was born in 1934 and died in 2020. He was one of the leading figures in modern British bookbinding and design closely associated with the The Folio Society for whom he created a number of distinguished bindings.
