Dust jacket rubbed and a bit foxed with just a few short tears to the rear panel. Overall a very appealing copy of Joyce's only play. Exiles captures the romantic dramas of Richard and Bertha a common-law couple recently returned to their home country of Ireland and the complex dynamics that play out between them Richard's cousin Robert and Robert's wife Beatrice. "The play was not especially popular at the time and is commonly regarded as one of Joyce's weaker works. However much of the initial criticism may have had to do with the play's provocative themes: unconventional relationships jealousy weakened national ties to Ireland and exile. All of these topics resonate with Joyce's personal life making Exiles a partly autobiographical work" James Joyce Foundation. After W.B. Yeats refused to stage the play Joyce unsuccessfully attempted to interest theatrical companies throughout England Ireland and the United States. Exiles eventually debuted in German translation in Munich in 1919. Of the premiere Joyce wrote: "Complete fiasco. Row in theatre. Play withdrawn. Author invited but not present.Thank God" Morgan Library. The play was not performed in English until a staging at New York's Neighborhood Playhouse in 1925. Slocum & Cahoon 15. A Near Fine copy in a Very Good plus clipped dust jacket with a small chip near the top edge of the spine and a small water spot at the front fold of the jacket flap else a very collectible copy. Slocum A-16. The author notes included in this edition of Exiles were uncovered after Joyce's death and appear here for the first time. "Exiles" draws on the story of "The Dead" the final short story in Joyce's story collection Dubliners. The basic premise of Exiles involves a love triangle between Richard Rowan a Dublin writer recently returned from exile in Rome Bertha his common law wife and his old friend Robert Hand a journalist. There are obvious parallels to be drawn with Joyce's own life – Joyce and Nora Barnacle lived unmarried in Trieste during the years the fictional Rowans were living in Rome while Robert Hand is roughly the same age of Joyce's friends Oliver St. John Gogarty and Vincent Cosgrave and shares some characteristics with them both. This arrangement is slightly complicated by a second love triangle involving Rowan Hand and Hand's cousin Beatrice Justice. The fictional Beatrice who in the play has recovered from a life-threatening illness is just two years younger than Joyce's cousin Elizabeth Justice who died in 1912. Viking Press, unknown

1921rif. Exiles_Egoist_1921EXILES: A PLAY IN THREE ACTS James Joyce. London: Egoist Press 1921. The second English edition of Exiles published The Egoist Press from newly set type first edition thus incorporating corrections from the Grant Richards and BW Huebsch first editions. One of only 500 bound copies in an issue of 1000 sheets with the remaining sets of sheets handed over to Jonathan Cape in 1924. Bound in dark green cloth over boards blind-stamped on cover and gilt stamped on spine. A Very Good copy of a rare edition. No dust jacket. Spine slightly tanned and gilt rubbed; slight fraying to crown. Joyce's only work for theatre written between the spring 1914 and autumn 1915 was first published in 1918 in simultaneous editions by Grant Richards London and BW Huebsch New York. In the interim Joyce with help of Ezra Pound sought but failed to arrange a performance of the play. Its first production was in German translation Verbannte in Munich in 1919; its first performance in English was at The Neighborhood Playhouse of New York in February 1925. Though short-lived The Egoist Press had a significant impact on modernist letters as did its proprietor and founder Harriet Shaw Weaver. Not only did Weaver support and publish Joyce but her Egoist Press issued first editions of Tarr by Wyndham Lewis Prufrock by T.S. Eliot and Quia Pauper Amavi by Ezra Pound in addition to bringing the works of H.D. Robert McAlmon Dora Marsden Richard Aldington and Marianne Moore to the English public often for the first time.
