Here on offer is a very fine example of James Joyce's modernist masterpiece Ulysses chronicling the experiences of three Dubliners over the course of a single day 16 June 1904 which its fans now celebrate annually as Bloomsday. It is considered one of the most important works of modernist literature and a classic of the genre having been called "a demonstration and summation of the entire movement". This beautiful copy is a numbered 1st edition thus 1st printing of the work published in 2004 by The Folio Society in London UK. The Folio Society is a privately owned London-based publisher founded by Charles Ede in 1947 and incorporated in 1971. It was not easy to find a publisher in America willing to take it on and when Jane Jeap and Margaret Anderson started printing extracts from the book in their literary magazine The Little Review in 1918 they were arrested and charged with publishing obscenity. They were fined $100 and even The New York Times expressed satisfaction with their conviction. Ulysses was not published in book form until 1922 when another American woman Sylvia Beach published it in Paris in her Shakespeare & Company. Ulysses was not available legally in any English-speaking country until 1934 when Random House successfully defended Joyce against obscenity charges and published it in the Modern Library." /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// James Augustine Aloysius Joyce 2 February 1882 – 13 January 1941 was an Irish novelist poet and literary critic. He contributed to the modernist avant-garde movement and is regarded as one of the most influential and important writers of the 20th century. Joyce's novel Ulysses 1922 is a landmark in which the episodes of Homer's Odyssey are paralleled in a variety of literary styles particularly stream of consciousness. Other well-known works are the short-story collection Dubliners 1914 and the novels A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man 1916 and Finnegans Wake 1939. His other writings include three books of poetry a play letters and occasional journalism. . . . Joyce's work still has a profound influence on contemporary culture. Ulysses is a model for fiction writers particularly its explorations in the power of language. Its emphasis on the details of everyday life have opened up new possibilities of expression for authors painters and film-makers. It retains its prestige among readers often ranking high on 'Great Book' lists. . . . In popular culture the work and life of Joyce is celebrated annually on 16 June known as Bloomsday in Dublin and in an increasing number of cities worldwide. . . . Slocum & Cahoon pp. 25-26 Condition and Description: Octavo ~7.5 x 6.75" publisher's blue wrappers printed in white 735 pp. Wrappers rubbed. Flaking to the paper at the joints and extremities most heavily to the crown. Tanning to the edges and spine. "History Stephen said is a nightmare from which I am trying to awake." Ulysses is widely regarded as one of the best and most defining novels of the century. Despite its later canonization the novel was widely banned upon release with distribution relying on subterfuge and smuggling operations to evade law enforcement. Despite these efforts large portions of the first February 1922 and second October 1922 printings were seized and destroyed. All but a handful of the third printing January 1923 met the same fate. Many copies were stripped of their recognizable wrappers or rebound into the new covers of unrelated titles as camouflage. The novel would not be legalized in the United States until 1933 and the United Kingdom in 1936. Copies from the 1920s are relics of an era when free speech in the arts was under threat.
