1936ref. 30022London: John Lane The Bodley Head 1936. First Edition English Issuance First Authorized English edition one of 900 copies only printed on special Japon vellum papers probably the most beautiful First Edition of ULYSSES ever printed. Tall thick royal 8vo publisher’s original full green polished linen buckram with the gilt lettering and pictorial decoration of the gilt bow designed by Eric Gill on the upper cover and spine housed in the rare printed dustjacket lettered in black on the upper cover and on the spine and decorated with the bow in red on the spine panel. xvi 766 pp. A well preserved copy the covers of the green cloth in bright and beautiful condition without any of the fading typical to the book the back just a bit mellowed at the tips the dustjacket with the price still intact and showing some light aging and some evidence of use or handling but whole and without major defects or substantial wear some tidying up to the verso. A pleasing survival with all aspects of a collector’s demands in good order. A HIGHLY IMPORTANT LITERARY FIRST EDITION ARGUABLY THE GREATEST WORK OF FICTION OF THE 2OTH CENTURY RARE IN THE DUSTJACKET. This an extremely impressive copy of the first authorized English edition. IT IS ALSO THE FIRST EDITION of ULYSSES PRINTED IN GREAT BRITAIN. The superb binding executed in full polished linen buckram has been especially designed for this great book. DESIGNS FOR THE BINDING EXECUTED IN GILT WERE ACCOMPLISHED BY ERIC GILL ONE OF THE MOST GIFTED MASTERS OF THE ART. The typeface is extremely attractive and very readable the printing on fine paper makes the book unusually handsome and presents what is perhaps the most beautiful printing of ULYSSES ever accomplished. Along with the text there are a series of appendices attached including copies of the International Protest against the unauthorized and mutilated printings of ULYSSES done especially in the United States; a copy of the injunction issued to prevent Samuel Roth from continuing his piracies of ULYSSES; a copy of Joyce’s letter to Bennet Cerf concerning the promotion legal fight and publication of ULYSSES on the author’s behalf; a copy of the decision of the US District Court which was rendered on December 6 1933 which lifted the ban on ULYSSES and a copy of the subsequent decision of the US Court of Appeals rendered in August of the following year which upheld the original decision; a copy of the forward to the first American edition and a bibliography of the works of James Joyce. ULYSSES can be viewed as the pinnacle of the Modernist movement and its impact on all subsequent western literature is unmistakable. Such writers as Virginia Woolf John Dos Passos William Faulkner Samuel Beckett Malcolm Lowry and Anthony Burgess have all paid tribute consciously or unconsciously to Joyce's influence. Burgess as well pronounced it the greatest single work in the English literature of this century and he is not alone in that opinion. John Lane, The Bodley Head hardcover

A handsome book with only light evidence of age. ONE OF THE KEY PRINTINGS BY SYLVIA BEACH’S SHAKESPEARE AND COMPANY OF THIS LANDMARK OF 20th CENTURY LITERATURE. It is the first reprinting of the work to use entirely reset type. The work was accomplished with Joyce’s participation. The copy is bound as is often found on printings of the period in a simple style designed to draw little attention to itself due the controversy of the text within. In all a highly collectable copy. Burgess as well pronounced it the greatest single work in the English literature of the century and he was not alone in that opinion. At the beginning of the present century the Modern Library placed ULYSSES in the number one spot on their 100 best books of the 20th century list. Shakespeare and Company hardcover
1922ref. 20385Paris Tokyo: Shakespeare and Company Yushodo/Inkpen Press 1922 2001. A very finely produced facsimile of the first edition of Ulysses LIMITED to 120 copies. The facsimile is printed on fine paper by the Inkpen Press. Large thick 8vo 195 x 235 mm beautifully hand-bound in full crushed blue morocco the spine handsomely lettered in gilt housed in a blue moire cloth slipcase. 10 732 2 pp. A mint pristine and superb copy. A BEAUTIFULLY PRODUCED FACSIMILE OF THE FIRST EDITION OF JAMES JOYCE’S ULYSSES the most important novel of the twentieth century . The true first edition of this book is now beyond the range of all but a very small handful of collectors this facsimile provides the opportunity to own this important and handsome work in a format and with the feel of the first edition. Burgess as well pronounced it the greatest single work in the English literature of the last century and he is not alone in that opinion. According to James Spoerri "This fortunate combination of printer and publisher resulted in the appearance of ULYSSES as a book whose physical aspect is particularly suited to its content. It is a fat and inviting volume the blue and white of its covers subtly evocative of the Greece whose epic it so closely parallels" quoted in the catalogue for the Garden Sale Sotheby's 1989. While this facsimile is of course not the true first edition the physical attributes are the same. [Shakespeare and Company ], Yushodo/Inkpen Press hardcover

A Modern Fine Press Interpretation of a Modernist Masterpiece A beautifully realized late 20th-century fine press edition of Ulysses pairing Joyce's monumental text with the bold symbolic visual language of Mimmo Paladino. The etchings - printed in striking combinations of gold and black - offer a contemporary artistic response to Joyce's dense and allusive narrative. Mimmo Paladino born in Paduli on 18 December 1948 is an Italian sculptor painter and printmaker. He is a leading name in the Transvanguardia artistic movement and one of the many European artists to revive Expressionism in the 1980s. Jeff Clements MBE was born in 1934 and died in 2020. He was one of the leading figures in modern British bookbinding and design closely associated with the The Folio Society for whom he created a number of distinguished bindings. The production reflects the Folio Society's highest standards: luxurious materials careful typography and an emphasis on the book as an object of art. The full goatskin binding and solander case place this edition firmly within the tradition of modern private press craftsmanship. London: The Folio Society, 1998 unknown
1958ref. JJ048London: John Lane The Bodley Head 1958 First unlimited edition eighth printing 'Cheap Edition" to dust jacket flap. Publisher's green cloth with the Homeric bow device designed by Eric Gill stamped in blind to front board spine lettered in gilt; in the original pale green dust jacket lettered in black with the Homeric bow on the spine with an advertisement for James Joyce by Herbert Gorman on the rear panel. Very good book with moderate spotting to first few pages and edges of text block boards square and spine bright; very good or better unclipped dust jacket with top edge lightly worn upper and lower edges of flaps somewhat faded and very faint spotting to right edge of front panel barely noticeable. Overall a crisp and bright copy of Joyce's masterpiece. Considered one of the most important works of Modernist literature Ulysses was first published serially in The Little Review from March 1918 to December 1920 at which time copies of the magazine were seized and the magazine's publishers were taken to trial due to the sexually explicit nature of the novel. Because of the controversy surrounding Ulysses Joyce was unable to find a publisher for the book until his friend Sylvia Beach the American owner of Shakespeare and Company bookstore in Paris agreed to publish it. The stream-of-consciousness novel follows Leopold Bloom and Stephen Daedalus through Dublin on an ordinary day June 16 1904-notably the same day that Joyce first went on a date with Nora Barnacle who would later become his wife. The book is heavily fragmented and allusive with a structure that loosely parallels Homer's The Odyssey. Regarding the book's complexity Joyce said "I've put in so many enigmas and puzzles that it will keep the professors busy for centuries arguing over what I meant and that's the only way of ensuring one's immortality.". First Unlimited Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/Dust Jacket Included. London: John Lane, The Bodley Head hardcover
1922ref. 5041London: Egoist Press 1922. First UK edition. 732 pp. 7.25 x 9 inches. Sewn signatures glued into printed paper covers. One of two thousand numbered copies on handmade paper. Accompanied by separate errata sheet folded twice to make eight pages. Printed by Maurice Darantiere in October 1922. Light soiling to covers and wear and chipping to edges with some creasing to spine and normal toning to pages otherwise a very good and unaltered copy and very uncommon thus. The uncut errata sheet has a light stain along the leading edge not affecting the text. Housed in a quarter-leather and cloth clamshell case with color cover label reproducing the front cover of the book; the case is clean and tight attractive despite a very faint stain on the top edge and a few stray marks on the back. The second printing and first British edition of Joyce's landmark novel printed for John Rodker in London eight months after the first printing for Shakespeare and Company in Paris by the same printer in Dijon France. With a new title page and front matter and the first appearance of the errata. A nice sound copy in the original and now iconic blue printed wrappers almost always found rebound and/or repaired and rarely with the scarce errata sheet. Egoist Press hardcover
