1922réf. 846021922. JOYCE James. Ulysses. Orig. blue wrappers in custom folding box. Paris: Published for the Egoist Press London by John Rodker 1922. One of 1000 copies this being no. 929. Nice copy of the edition known as the 1st English edition but technically second printing published under the aegis of the Egoist Press from the plates of the first edition printed in Paris by Shakespeare & Company in February 1922. This edition was published om October 1922. Misleadingly referred to as the "first English" or "first U.K. edition" because it was intended to be sold in England rather than Paris; however the first edition to be physically printed in England wasn't until that of the Bodley Head in 1936. Paper wrappers slightly worn and chipped split at hinges small stain to lower left corner of back wrapper; internally clean. Very good with the highly desirable 7pp. errata laid in. unknown

1927réf. 52187Basel: Rhein-Verlags 1927. Hardcover. Translation by Georg Goyert. Complete 3-volume set. 8vo. Quarter calf with raised bands and gilt spine lettering and marbled paper over boards. 458pp 465pp 662pp. Top edges gilt; sewn-in brown cloth page markers. Near fine. Tight and bright with just faint sunning to the spines. Handsome set of the first foreign language edition of Joyce's magnum to appear: the first German-language edition. Goyert 1888-1966 won the contest held by Joyce's German publisher and even met with Joyce several times about the translation but Joyce was critical of the finished product as were many others. The Hans Wollschläger translation of the 1970s has become the favored German text more nuanced and accurate. But Goyert pioneered the challenging task as the first. "Privatdruck" Private Printing appears on each title page apparently to forestall censorship attempts and the limitation statement Volume I notes the limitation to 1000 numbered copies this #839 on laid paper. Half of the print run was issued in this half-leather form the other half in green wrappers. A superb example. Rhein-Verlags hardcover

"Joyce not to mince words is Ireland's Shakespeare its Goethe its Racine its Tolstoy" John Sutherland. The book also proved to be a major test case for laws of freedom of expression. "Forced underground by censors this was a cryptoclassic already before it was read a subversive colossus" Sherry.
