1927réf. 48657Paris: Shakespeare and Company 1927. Very good plus. Ninth printing of James Joyce's masterpiece one of the great works of literature in English. ULYSSES first saw print in the modernist literary magazine THE LITTLE REVIEW edited by Margaret Anderson and Jane Heap. Midway through their serialization issues of the magazine were seized and the editors were brought to trial in the fall of 1920. When they were convicted ULYSSES was abandoned only about half of it published. This disaster led to the now iconic publication of the book by Sylvia Beach at Shakespeare & Company of which this copy is a ninth printing. 8'' x 6.25''. Later blue cloth boards. 736 pages. Unauthorized printed and discreetly distributed by Samuel Roth in New York City and Philidelphia six years before before Ulysses' ban would be lifted in the U.S. Although Roth had formerly published Ulysses' serially in Two Worlds Monthly these full length copies made to pass as Shakespeare and Co.'s ninth printing would ulitmately place Roth in jail. Despite its disreputation it is nevertheless held by several special collections across the U.S. and is an essential character in the history of Ulysses and banned books in 20th century America. réf. ST15816-12Dublin: Lilliput Press 1997. No. 3 OF 100 SPECIAL COPIES of the "Illegal" First Dublin Edition bound in quarter leather and signed by Rose and Banville from a total edition of 1000 numbered and 26 lettered copies. 240 x 158 mm. 9 1/2 x 6 1/4". 4 p.l. v-lxxxiii 1 739 3 pp.Edited by Danis Rose. With a foreword by John Banville. Publisher's quarter blue morocco over navy cloth boards smooth spine with silver lettering. In a blue buckram slipcase. In mint condition. This is the first printing of Joyce's masterpiece actually to be done in Ireland--75 years after its initial publication. Generally recognized as the most important 20th-century novel in English Joyce's chronicle of Leopold Bloom's odyssey through Dublin excited much controversy upon publication in 1922 and was for years a target of censorship especially in the U.S. and U.K. The present edition also met with some animosity when it was discovered that the editor prominent Joyce scholar Danis Rose used some language from the original manuscripts without permission from Joyce's estate. A lawsuit for copyright infringement was issued and this work subsequently became known as the "Illegal Edition." Despite the unpleasant dispute Rose's "Ulysses" was lauded for its readability and was described by the Irish Times as "a landmark edition for first-time readers and life-time fans." Founded in 1984 and still in operation today the Lilliput Press has published more than 600 titles of Irish interest and is regarded as one of Ireland's most esteemed small publishers. This strictly limited edition of 100 rarely appears for sale: we could trace just one auction appearance at PBA Galleries in 2005 where a copy was sold for $1495 all in. Lilliput Press unknown books

A Modern Fine Press Interpretation of a Modernist Masterpiece A beautifully realized late 20th-century fine press edition of Ulysses pairing Joyce's monumental text with the bold symbolic visual language of Mimmo Paladino. The etchings - printed in striking combinations of gold and black - offer a contemporary artistic response to Joyce's dense and allusive narrative. Mimmo Paladino born in Paduli on 18 December 1948 is an Italian sculptor painter and printmaker. He is a leading name in the Transvanguardia artistic movement and one of the many European artists to revive Expressionism in the 1980s. Jeff Clements MBE was born in 1934 and died in 2020. He was one of the leading figures in modern British bookbinding and design closely associated with the The Folio Society for whom he created a number of distinguished bindings. The production reflects the Folio Society's highest standards: luxurious materials careful typography and an emphasis on the book as an object of art. The full goatskin binding and solander case place this edition firmly within the tradition of modern private press craftsmanship. London: The Folio Society, 1998 unknown books

Very good or better with some wear to spine corners lightly worn and front wrapper with repair to edges and light toning and staining. Overall a pleasing copy of this important translation of Joyce's tour de force. Slocum & Cahoon D17. This first French edition of Ulysses was the second translated edition of the book the first German edition was published in 1927 and one of only four translated editions published in Joyce's lifetime the other two being Czech 1930 and Japanese 1931. Interestingly key sections of the book were translated into French before the book was published in English for a "Special Session on James Joyce" hosted by Valery Larbaud and Adrienne Monnier Sylvia Beach's romantic and literary partner at Monnier's bookshop La Maison des Amis des Livres on December 7 1921 Ulysses was first published in English in 1922. Jacques-Benoist Méchin translated the final word of the book with a capitalized "Oui" which Joyce subsequently adopted for the English language version ".yes I said yes I will Yes" after a lengthy discussion with Méchin an artistic choice that contributed heavily to the enduring critical interest in that line. Assessing the impact of Ulysses T. S. Eliot said of Joyce "He single-handedly killed the 19th century." Ulysses is a stream-of-consciousness novel that follows Leopold Bloom through Dublin on an ordinary day June 16 1904-notably the same day that Joyce first went on a date with Nora Barnacle who would later become his wife. The book is heavily fragmented and allusive with a structure that loosely parallels Homer's The Odyssey. Regarding the book's complexity Joyce said "I've put in so many enigmas and puzzles that it will keep the professors busy for centuries arguing over what I meant and that's the only way of ensuring one's immortality.".
