His travels undertaken chiefly for the purpose of trading or of geological survey led him into places where rock-engravings and rock-paintings abounded and his interest in the Bushmen led him to copy the most striking figures or groups he found on the rocks.” Google books. 1910ref. 2260235Chicago IL: Regan Printing and Publishing House 1910. 1st Edition . Hardcover. VG. 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall. See photos for condition details. Hardcover signed and inscribed by the author on the front end page: "Inscribed to Capt. O. H. Oldroyd with the soldiers friendship of the author. John A. Joyce". The captain's name not be verified as the author's handwriting for the letter O is uncommon. If it is indeed O. H. Oldroyd then amines this book was owned by Osborn H. I. Oldroyd with the 20th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. When he returned to Ohio he was steward of the National Soldiers' Home where he was referred by friends as Captain. He also lived in Lincoln's home and created the Lincoln Museum. The book condition is excellent with the blue cloth and gilt being bright although there is darkening to the edges and spine. There are a few smudge marks as well. Internal binding is good and text pages are tight. No other handwriting other than the author's inscription. Text pages are slightly toned but clean but there is minor spotting on the end pages and pastedowns. The pages around the images and tissue guards also show foxing from the papers reacting. There are a few nicks to the exterior cloth edges and the tissue guard for the author's photograph has some creases as seen in the photo. Regan Printing and Publishing House hardcover
