TWO FINE WORKS BOUND INTO ONE VOLUME. BRACEBRIDGE HALL is one of Irving’s most enduring works depicting in his best style the medley of ideas thrust upon him during his time spent living in England. Irving himself says that he had spent so much time in all stages of his existence reading and thinking about England how the differences between the old country and the new the country of his birth were bubbling all about him. BRACEBRIDGE HALL is his ode to England to tracing the footsteps of history and breathing the poetry of a sanctified land. Irving said that the popularity of his writing is due to an odd reason: “it has been a matter of marvel that man from the wilds of America should express himself in tolerable English. I was looked upon as something new and strange in literature; a kind of demi-savage with a feather in his hand instead of on his head; and there was a curiosity to hear what such a being had to say about civilized society.” WOLFERT'S ROOST AND MISCELLANIES is a collection of essays sketches and stories centered around Wolfert's Roost a historic Dutch stone cottage in Tarrytown New York. The property is named after Wolfert Acker 1667–1753 an early colonial American yeoman and local official who built the original 17th-century farmhouse on the Hudson River. Washington Irving purchased the historic property in the 1830s lovingly renovated and expanded it in the Dutch style and renamed the estate Sunnyside. The book features the title sketch about the estate alongside classic folklore travel pieces and reflections on Dutch-American history. Thomas Y. Crowell & Co. hardcover

AN EXCELLENT SET OF IRVING'S POPULAR BIOGRAPHY OF GEORGE WASHINGTON VERY ATTRACTIVE AND IN VERY FINE STATE OF PRESERVATION. The extensive biography of George Washington written by one of the most popular American authors of his time. Already very famous for his Sketch Book that brought to life such Rip Van Winkle and the Headless Horseman of Sleepy Hollow by the 1850s Irving decided to write a biography of George Washington. In the mid-nineteenth century biography was an increasingly popular literary genre and the much-admired Washington was an ideal subject. Previous biographies of Washington had been written by Mason Locke Weems who invented the cherry tree myth and Chief Justice John Marshall but given Irving’s literary talent a biography of George Washington by him was extremely appealing to his publishers. In 1853 Irving began his research about Washington. He utilized two important sources—The Writings of George Washington and a series of George Washington’s letters acquired through the State Department. After two years of research Irving began writing his Washington biography at his home in Sunnyside New York. In his preface Irving explained that he had long wanted to write a biography of Washington though ill health as well as his many travels to Europe delayed the project. According to Irving he sought to write in a narrative style that also rigorously grounded itself in historical fact. Following historians and reviewers have argued that by exploring Washington’s military and personal life in a realistic manner Irving was able to transform him from a demigod figure into a human subject far more approachable and understandable to the average reader. The historian George Bancroft lauded Irving for writing both with the qualities of good historian and with narrative tone that made the events portrayed seem natural. Thomas Y. TOGETHER A WHIMSICAL AND BELOVED WORK AND A HANDSOME EDITION OF THE GREAT TESTAMENT TO IRVING'S OFT' NEGLECTED ABILITIES AS A HISTORIAN. A companion to his great work on Columbus and written while Irving was a diplomatic attaché in Spain 1826-29 these books were the most painstaking effort of Irving's life. " SPANISH VOYAGES chronicles the voyages of many of Spain’s most important explorers such as Alonzo de Ojeda Ponce de Leon Vasco Nunez de Balboa and Diego de Nicuesa. Irving's "COLUMBUS" was both a scholarly and popular biography based primarily on the work of the Spanish writer Navarrete. Navarrete had published his work on Columbus which contained a number of previously unknown and significant documents. However Irving felt that “the whole presented rather a mass of rich materials for history than a history itself.and the sight of disconnected papers and official documents is apt to be repulsive to the general reader who seeks for clear and continued narrative.” In fact he felt that nearly every account had been incomplete while many important documents and manuscripts had been ignored. Thus he hoped to offer a more rigorous and yet accessible account. Written while Irving was a diplomatic attaché in Spain 1826-29 "it was the most painstaking effort of Irving's life and it won him election to the 'Real Academia de la Historia' the friendship of Navarrete and a literary reputation in Spain where the work is still quoted respectfully" DAB. KNICKERBOCKER'S HISTORY OF NEW YORK is a whimsical history of the city by the mythical Diedrich Knickerbocker. Irving began this work with his brother as a parody of a recently published PICTURE OF NEW YORK a routine guidebook of the period. After his brother abandoned the project Irving moulded it to his own purpose creating a singular work of early American humour. Thomas Y. Crowell & Co. hardcover

AN EARLY PRINTING IN HANDSOME BINDING OF THESE IMPORTANT WORKS. Irving began writing notes for a book on Mohammed as early as 1827 while working on his biography of Christopher Columbus. He completed his first chapters of the book while simultaneously working on his 'Tales of the Alhambra'. Eventually his LIFE OF MAHOMET was the first sympathetic biography of the Prophet Muhammad ever to appear in America. The renowned researcher and historian Dr. Harold J. Greenburg in his paper on Washington Irving published in London in November 1955 opines: "Christopher Columbus departing from Granada in 1492 and employing the principles of navigation developed by Muslim scientists had brought to America the accumulated wisdom of both the Christian and Muslim civilizations. Three and a half centuries later Washington Irving while penetrating through the Iberian peninsula was to rediscover the proud culture and present it to the West." From the preface: “Some apology may seem necessary for presenting a life of Mahomet at the present day when no new fact can be added to those already known concerning him. Many years ago during a residence in Madrid the author projected a series of writings illustrative of the domination of the Arabs in Spain. These were to be introduced by a sketch of the life of the founder of the Islam Faith and the first mover of Arabian conquest. Most of the particulars for this were drawn from Spanish sources and from Gagnier’s traslation of the Arabian historian Abulfeda a copy of which the author found in the Jesuits’ Library of the Convent of Isidro at Madrid. Such is the origin of the work now given to the public; on which the author lays no claim to novelty of fact nor profundity of research. It still bears the type of a work intended for a family Library; in constructing which the whole aim of the writer has been to digest into an easy perspicuous and flowing narrative the admitted facts concerning Mahomet together with such legends and traditions as have been wrought into the whole system of oriental literature; and at the same time to give such a summary of his faith as might be sufficient for the general reader. Under such circumstances he has not thought it worth while to encumber his pages with a scaffolding of references and citations nor to depart from the old English nomenclature of oriental names.” Thomas Y. A HANDSOMELY BOUND EARLY PRINTING OF THESE IMPORTANT WORKS. Despite Irving's use of an imaginary chronicler Agapida who’s dialogue livens up the flavor of the text the CONQUEST OF GRANADA was the product of careful historical research in Madrid. Irving was serving as a titular diplomat a post which gave him access to considerable resources as well as access to the most important inner social circles. It remains an excellent history on the expulsion of the Moors from Spain. This work along with his THE ALHAMBRA highlights both Irving’s scholarly abilities and his eloquent writing style. Thomas Y.
