From the dust jacket: "This fine novel reveals an unfamiliar side of Zola's art but one no less likely to appeal to his new and already large following of readers in English. It is a simple poignant story of frustrated love and renunciation and a penetrating glimpse into the terrors of childish jealousy. Paris forms the background to the story the Paris landscape seen through the windows of Helene's room drawn at all hours and in all seasons in a series of unforgettable word-pictures. But Zola's mastery of atmosphere and description need no comment; what is most remarkable about this novel is his precise and sympathetic comprehension of the intricacies of the human heart." 1957réf. 8283Nice condition vintage copy of "Madeleine Ferat" by EMILE ZOLA with its original dust jacket. 1957; The Citadel Press; New York. The dust jacket is un-clipped with the original price intact on the front flap. The jacket comes with a clear protective sleeve - not shown. From the dust jacket: "Can a woman's first love affair leave so strong and imprint on her body and mind that it will unalterably affect her marriage with another This ancient belief is the mainspring of Madeleine Ferat one of Zola's most disturbing novels. Madeleine almost by chance takes a lover when she is young. The affair is brief but she is truly in love and the man Jacques leaves her. He is believed dead when she married the weak tenderhearted Guillaume. When Jacques eventually returns the years of Madeleine's loyalty and gentleness towards Guillaume count for nothing. The past is too strong: Madeleine cannot forget Jacques - and she discovers that he was by cruel chance her husband's closest friend. Zola uses this melodramatic plot to such effect that the tragic battle of loyalties and the ultimate disaster are as unforgettable as are the pictures of his protagonists." Condition: Clean covers and spine. Sharp cover corners. Bright gilt lettering on the spine. Tight binding with no cracks and no loose pages. Both covers are firmly attached. Nice interior - the pages are clean and appear unread with only very light age-toning and a light stain at the bottom-right quadrant of page 107 this could be discoloration from pulp though I am unsure. Tiny stain near the center of the front end papers. Overall the book is in Near Fine condition. The dust jacket is un-clipped with the original price intact on the front flap; tiny stain at the right edge of the front flap; small tears at the top edge of the spine.overall the jacket is in Very Good condition.
