1880réf. 71646Paris: Goupil & Cie 1880. Fine. Goupil & Cie Paris 1880 24 x 33 cm une feuille Photoglyptie from the Galerie contemporaine. Portrait of Zola at the age of 35-40 years. Mounted sheet on which a 19x24cm photoglyptie has been laid down. Caption at bottom of mount: Galerie Contemporaine 126 boulevard de Magenta. Phot. Goupil et Cie. Cliché Carjat 10 rue Notre-Dame de Lorette. One tiny white spot in the beard. Very fine condition. Similar to a carbon print in its warm and deep tones photoglyptie is a complex photomechanical process for photographic reproduction which was used by publishers for about 20 years from 1875 to 1895. Seeking an ideal and aesthetic image of famous men the plates were always retouched and repainted to smooth out an unsightly wrinkle or too obvious defect to polish the hair etc. Thus photography and printmaking converge in a new form of representation. The Galerie Contemporaine became a publishing house that sold images of contemporary men; these images were assembled in 8 folio volumes by Paul de Lacroix but continued to be sold separately at the headquarters of the Galerie Contemporaine. 1898réf. 74855Paris: Imprimerie Champenoispour CH. MassonH. Piazza 1898. Fine. Imprimerie Champenois pour CH. Masson H. Piazza Paris Juin 1898 24.50 x 32 cm une feuille et une serpente Rare original color lithograph executed by Jules-Gustave Besson for L'Estampe Moderne series number 14 published in June 1898. One of 50 deluxe proofs printed on Japan paper with wide margins artist's signature in the plate publisher's blind stamp depicting a child's profile in lower margin numbered luxury edition stamp on verso; engraving preceded by a tissue guard captioned with the artist's name title and text. Lithograph inspired by an extract from Germinal by Emile Zola reproduced on the print's tissue guard. Magnificent French monthly publication edited between May 1897 and April 1899 L'Estampe moderne consists of original chromolithographs which unlike other periodicals such as Les Maîtres de l'Affiche and as stipulated on the tissue guards were created specifically by each artist for the review. Thus 100 prints appeared in total covering the major artistic movements of the late 19th century: Symbolism Art Nouveau Pre-Raphaelites Orientalists and Belle Époque. Each delivery of four prints was issued in 2000 copies sold for 3.50F and 100 on Japan paper offered at 10F. Henri Piazza also planned a confidential deluxe printing: 50 copies on Japan paper with wide margins and 50 in black on China paper at the considerable price of 30F. This print of handsome format is superbly printed on the most prestigious of papers: Japan. Thick silky satiny and lustrous it contributes to making each page a work in its own right. Its ink absorption quality and affinity with colors also make it the ideal support for these very beautiful lithographs. French collectors' interest in artistic posters intensified at the beginning of the 1890s. Octave Uzanne to describe this fever invented the term ""poster mania"". The poster originally popular and plastered in the streets of the capital then became an art object and its ephemeral support became precious and destined for preservation. Piazza decided to remove the poster from its advertising vocation and elevate it to the rank of a complete work of art on the same level as the deluxe illustrated book. He thus composed a prestigious collection of entirely original works by the most prominent European artists of the moment: Georges de Feure Eugène Grasset Henri Detouche Emile Berchmans Louis Rhead Gaston de Latenay Lucien Lévy-Dhurmer Gustave-Max Stevens Charles Doudelet Hans Christiansen Henri Fantin-Latour Steinlen Ibels Engels Willette Henri Meunier Evenepoël Bellery-Desfontaines Charles Léandre etc. Handsome copy. 1886réf. 000593On offer is a group of three early English editions of Émile Zola's novels published in London by Vizetelly & Co. in 1886–1887 and uniformly bound in oxblood half leather over marbled boards. Bringing together Nana His Masterpiece and Germinal; or Master and Man the group spans the worlds of Parisian society artistic ambition and industrial labour explored in Zola's Rougon-Macquart novels. The matching bindings feature five raised bands gilt author and title lettering dates at the foot of the spines and elaborate floral gilt tooling within the compartments. The boards and endpapers display coordinated marbling in shades of red pink and cream with green accents. Although the leather shows substantial wear in places the gilt spines retain a strong decorative presence. Nana: A Realistic Novel. London: Vizetelly & Co. 1887 Designated "New Edition" on the title page which describes the text as "Translated without abridgment from the 127th French edition." Red-printed illustrations include an illustrated title depicting George's first interview with Nana. The novel's world of performance desire and wealth is reflected in these period images. Text concludes on page 398. His Masterpiece L'Œuvre; or Claude Lantier's Struggle for Fame: A Realistic Novel. London: Vizetelly & Co. 1887 Designated "New Edition" with a portrait of Zola etched by Bocourt. A translator's preface discusses the Parisian artistic fraternity and the relationship between the fictional Claude Lantier and contemporary painting including Édouard Manet. The volume offers a companion to the other novels through its treatment of creative ambition and the personal cost of pursuing recognition. Text concludes on page 371. Germinal; or Master and Man: A Realistic Novel. London: Vizetelly & Co. 1886 The title page states "Translated without abridgment from the 60th French edition" and calls for sixteen page engravings from designs by J. Férat. The illustrated title and accompanying engravings depict episodes of mining life and conflict including a deputation of striking miners received by Monsieur Hennebeau and a confrontation in the flooded mine. All three volumes bear the publisher's address at 42 Catherine Street Strand. They are offered as a group in matching bindings; their origin within a larger collection has not been established. No first-edition or fully collated illustration-completeness claim is made. Historical Note: Vizetelly & Co. played a significant role in bringing Émile Zola's novels to English readers and its publications became embroiled in Victorian censorship controversies. In 1888 publisher Henry Vizetelly was prosecuted over Zola's works with The Soil La Terre central to the proceedings and fined £100. A further prosecution in 1889 resulted in three months' imprisonment. These 1886–1887 volumes predate those prosecutions and belong to the firm's publishing programme that helped establish Zola's English readership—a tangible connection to the period's struggles over literary freedom and public morality. Condition: Dealer reviewed with rubbing scuffing abrasions and areas of surface loss to the leather together with wear to the raised bands spine ends corners and board edges. Marbled paper coverings show surface rubbing and wear. External joints are cracked and split in places most markedly on Nana where portions expose underlying binding material. His Masterpiece has a pronounced scuff across the spine title panel while Germinal shows vertical cracking in the spine leather. Gilt decoration and lettering remain largely legible and visually appealing. Paper shows age toning and scattered foxing particularly noticeable on Germinal's opening leaves. Marbled endpapers show wear along their folds. The bindings require careful handling and Nana is the most worn volume of the group. Please review photographs item for sale carefully for exact condition as they form part of the description. VIZETELLY & CO. hardcover
