1892réf. 008454Paris 1892. No Binding. Very fine. ZOLA Emile 1840-1902. Autographed letter signed. One page. 8x5 inches. In French. 10 lines. With original addressed and postmarked envelope. Two minor creases to letter where folded. Both items beautifully and professionally matted and framed along with a color lithographed portrait of the author the whole measuring 23x25½ inches. English translation taped to verso. Very fine. Paris: January 16 1892. Emile Zola 1840-1902 was a French novelist critic and political activist who was the most prominent French novelist of the late 19th century. He was noted for his theories of naturalism which underlie his monumental 20-novel series Les Rougon-Macquart and for his intervention in the Dreyfus Affair through his famous open letter "J'accuse." This autographed letter signed reads "My dear colleague If the preface is to appear in Figaro I absolutely must see the proofs because there is a mistake on page XIV which makes one sentence absolutely incomprehensible. Why hasn't anyone sent me any proofs from Flammarion Best regards Emile Zola." Zola refers to "Figaro" which was Le Figaro an important Paris newspaper. The preface that Zola refers to is most likely for his La Débâcle The Debacle published June 1892 soon after this letter was written. Zola also refers to "Flammarion" Marpon & Flammarion the publishing house that edited and published most of Zola's greatest works. The envelope for this letter is addressed to Monsieur Halpirine-Kaminsky. Ély Halpirine-Kaminsky 1858-1936 was considered one of the greatest translators of the major writers in French in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. He also translated Polish and Russian works. unknown books
