1930ref. 23392New York: E. P. Dutton & Co 1930. Salome: A Tragedy in One Act. Second edition "new edition". 60 pp. Illustrated with four new designs by John Vassos. Issued as a new edition uniform with The Ballad of Reading Gaol and The Harlot's House and Other Poems. The Ballad of Reading Gaol. First Vassos-illustrated trade edition. 124 pp. Illustrated by John Vassos with tissue guards over the plates. The Harlot's House and Other Poems. First Vassos-illustrated edition. 102 pp. Illustrated by John Vassos. With presentation inscription to Francis Heisler noted civil-liberties lawyer and defender of COs in landmark mid-century cases dated December 7 1930 signed with the initials "E.S.T." incorporating a quotation from Thomas S. Jones Jr.'s poem "Dusk at Sea." The three volumes are in their original Art Deco bindings & dust jackets designed by John Vassos. They are preserved together in a contemporary specially constructed striking black-and-gold geometric Art Deco slipcase purpose-built to accommodate the complete group. The slipcase closely reflects Vassos's distinctive Art Deco aesthetic. Dutton is documented as having issued Vassos/Wilde volumes with slipcases although surviving institutional records do not conclusively establish this particular three-volume case as a standard Dutton issue. These three volumes represent a purposefully conceived Dutton uniform series of Oscar Wilde works illustrated by John Vassos. Dutton issued The Ballad of Reading Gaol in 1928 and The Harlot's House and Other Poems in 1929 followed by the 1930 "new edition" of Salome which was specifically described as "uniform with" the preceding two Vassos-illustrated volumes. The three books were therefore deliberately designed and presented by Dutton as a related group of Vassos-illustrated Wilde editions. E. P. Dutton & Co unknown

An especially attractive Heritage Press production of Wilde's one-act tragedy conceived as an integrated work of book design by Valenti Angelo. Angelo surrounds the text with elaborate floral and Near Eastern-inspired ornament full-page illustrations decorative endpapers and hand-applied illumination. The Lord Alfred Douglas translation is accompanied by Holbrook Jackson's introduction which places Salome within Wilde's career and discusses the play's controversial publication and theatrical history. PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS: FRENCH-FOLDED LEAVES WITH DECORATION THROUGHOUT. Black cloth over boards with multiple blind-stamped borders and a large blind-stamped figure of Salome on both covers; gilt spine titles. Housed in the publisher's black slipcase. Slipcase approximately 10.5 inches tall. 51 pages. The text block is constructed from French-folded leaves with the sheets folded at the fore-edge to create double leaves. Each opening is extensively decorated with Angelo's yellow and gold-toned ornamental borders which change throughout the volume. Decorated endpapers; illustrated title-page spread; full-page color illustrations and decorative devices throughout. Angelo was responsible for both the illustration and overall book design. Contemporary descriptions record five full-page color illustrations in addition to the title vignette and other decoration. CONDITION: FINE IN A VERY GOODSLIPCASE. Binding tight and square cloth clean blind-stamped decoration distinct and gilt spine titles bright. Interior clean and fresh with the decorative pages and illustrations retaining strong color. Publisher's slipcase with light wear at the corners of the opening. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE - VALENTI ANGELO AND THE BOOK AS DECORATIVE OBJECT. Salome written by Wilde in French in 1891 and first published in 1893 became one of his most visually interpreted works most famously through Aubrey Beardsley's illustrations for the English edition. PRODUCTION BUILT AROUND THE ARTIST'S DESIGN. For the Heritage Press edition Valenti Angelo created an entirely different visual treatment integrating illustration typography ornament binding design and hand illumination into the physical structure of the book. Angelo was a prolific designer and illustrator for both the Heritage Press and Limited Editions Club and this edition is among the Heritage Press titles for which he supplied the complete decorative program. The result is particularly successful as an example of mid-century American illustrated book production: Wilde's decadent biblical drama recast through Angelo's highly stylized decorative vocabulary. 1894ref. 140949078London: Elkin Mathews & John Lane 1894. First Edition. Near Fine. First edition in English of Wilde's seminal one-act tragedy and the first to feature Aubrey Beardsley's lavishly unrestrained illustrations. One of 500 copies. xii 67 1 16 ads illustrated with frontispiece 9 full page plates and singular tailpiece. Bound in publisher's blue canvas cloth decoratively stamped in gilt after design by Beardsley. Near Fine with light sunning to spine and edges light foxing to cloth. Offsetting to front endsheets and armorial bookplate to pastedown there contents lightly tanned. A beautiful copy of a definitive work of the Decadent movement. Composed initially in French Wilde allegedly intended for Sarah Bernhardt to play Salome in hopes of bypassing strict British censors although it was inevitably banned by Lord Chamberlain due to the depiction of biblical characters. The play premiered on February 11 1896 at the Theatre de l'Oeuvre in Paris starring Lina Munte and directed by Lugne-Poe. Rave reviews ensued and later adaptions followed most notably Richard Strauss' Dresden production which premiered in 1905. The radical work served as a direct affront to Victorian moral standards and cemented the femme fatale archetype for future avant-garde luminaries. Mason 350. Elkin Mathews & John Lane unknown
