1920ref. 19986London and New York: John Lane The Bodley Head. Printed by Spottiswoods Ballantyne and Co. Ltd. London Colchester and Eton 1920. Limited Edition First Edition Thus with Alastair illustrations. Decorated Cloth Gilt impressed. Very Good Plus. Alistair Hans Henning Otto Harry Baron von Voigt. Limitation of 1000 copies -- the colophon informs us that the stones upon which the plates were printed were destroyed by the German invasion of Belgium during the early phase of the First World War. 4to. 30.5 by 23.5 cm. 36 pp. 12 illustrated two toned plates with Alastair illustrations. 10 of these are referenced in the List of Illustrations and the other two are at the beginning and the end. These two are also on a folded sheet that is about 2 cm shorter as well as about the same shy of the width of facing pages elsewhere. Alastair 1887-1969 was a German-born self-taught artist whose style was obviously greatly influenced by Beardsley and he emulated Beardsley too in illustrating works of Oscar Wilde who was the perfect template for Alastair's imagination which gloried in decadence as Wilde did decades earlier. This work "The Sphinx" was Alastair's first published work based on Wilde's writing and it is the work that exposed a far larger audience to his distinctive highly stylized artwork. The cloth cover designed by Charles Ricketts has a light film of dusty soiling which is removable with effort and a scattering of other small light stains which are not susceptible to the simple eraser. The interior is generally quite clean and lovely. The hinge is cracked in one place. John Lane, The Bodley Head. Printed by Spottiswoods, Ballantyne and Co. 1938ref. 148844Culver City CA: RKO Radio Pictures 1938. Vintage double weight photograph of Katharine Hepburn Howard Hawks and a resting Cary Grant on the set of the 1938 film. One of the foundational entries in the canon of American screwball comedies. Based on the short story by Hagar Wilde which originally appeared in Collier's Weekly magazine on April 10 1937. Zoologist David Huxley Grant develops a wary interest in the niece of dowager Mrs. Carelton Random Hepburn which as in all great screwball comedies is not finalized as a romance until about the last ten seconds of the film. But what makes this film singular is that the story is built around the maintenance aspects of raising a pet leopard creating a rapid-fire blur of events and dialogue that doesn't let up for the entire 102-minute running time. The film bombed upon release causing RKO to drop both of the stars but today ranks as one of the best films made by either. 8 x 10 inches. Near Fine. National Film Registry. 1899ref. 158271899. Shannon Charles. By the Author of Lady Windermere's Fan. London: Leonard Smithers and Co. 1899. Original mauve cloth decorated in gilt. First Edition consisting of 1000 regular copies so stated; there were also 100 signed copies on Van Gelder paper plus twelve signed copies on Japan vellum. This was the fourth and last of Wilde's four great comedies of manners -- following LADY WINDERMERE'S FAN published in 1893 A WOMAN OF NO IMPORTANCE 1894 and THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST 1899 five months earlier. "An Ideal Husband" had opened at the Theatre Royal on 3 January 1895 the actors had been quite annoyed that Wilde required them to rehearse on Christmas Day only to keep them waiting for him to appear. It was an immediate success but it was while "Earnest" and "Husband" were running that Wilde inadvisably filed suit against the Marquess of Queensberry father of Wilde's lover Lord Alfred Douglas for criminal libel; this quickly morphed into a charge of "gross indecency" against Wilde and when he was arrested in April his plays closed. Sentenced to two years' hard labour 1895-1897 upon his release he fled to France -- where he resided when this book was published. The artistic binding design is by Charles Shannon. This is a very good copy of a book that is difficult to find in any better condition: the spine is rather dull and there is moderate cover soil. Mason 385. Provenance: the front endpaper bears the signature "Wilmer C. France 1899".
