Octavo 19.3 by 12.9 cm. 11 pp. Original gray wrappers lettered and bordered in navy blue. Black and red lettered title page. Decorative head- and tailpiece with historiated initial letter. This collection of aphorisms was originally written for and published in the first and only issue of the Oxford University magazine The Chameleon Vol. 1 No. 1 December 1894 the successor to "The Spirit Lamp." Mr. Wilde's opening observation is a good example: "The first duty in life is to be as artificial as possible. What the second duty is no one has as yet discovered." The present work is in fact a pirated edition see Mason of which several variations are known. The limitation notes: "of this work seventy-five copies have been printed for private circulation" this being copy no. 35 noted in black ink. Mason Bibliography of Oscar Wilde no. 602; pp. 540-542; cf. no. 11 The Chameleon issue no. 1. Printed for private circulation unknown
