He was not allowed to send the document while still an inmate but could take it with him upon release which he did and gave to Robert Ross who may or may not have carried out Wilde's instructions to send a copy to Douglas who in turn denied having received it. Ross as executor published the expurgated version of the letter this book after Wilde's death. This complete text features an introduction from Wilde's son. London: Methuen and Co., 1949 unknown

1902réf. 140214Washington: Snohomish 1902. First edition of Wilde's classic Hellenic poem. Octavo original boards illustrated with engravings and hand painted initials embellished in gilt frontispiece by John Dennis Clancy. In very good condition. Wilde’s “theme is not as is often supposed art’s divorce from life but its inescapable arraignment by experience. His creative works almost always end in unmasking. The hand that adjusts the green carnation suddenly shakes an admonitory finger. While the ultimate virtue in Wilde’s essays is in make-believe the denouement of his dramas and narratives is that masks have to go. We must acknowledge what we are. Wilde at least was keen to do so. Though he offered himself as the apostle of pleasure his created world contains much pain” Ellmann xvi. Snohomish hardcover

The Picture of Dorian Gray: A Play in Three Acts and Prologue. Dramatized by G. Constant Lounsbery from the romance of Oscar Wilde. London: Simpkin Marshall Hamilton Kent & Co Ltd. 1913. First edition thus. Printed at the Ballantyne Press. A near fine copy the binding clean and unusually bright for this fragile white buckram issue. An uncommon early stage adaptation of Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray prepared by G. Constant Lounsbery for theatrical performance. While Wilde himself had explored dramatization during his lifetime no authorized stage version achieved lasting success leaving later playwrights to reinterpret the novel for the stage. This 1913 adaptation reflects the continued fascination with Wilde's most controversial work in the years following his death translating the novel's themes of aestheticism morality and duplicity into a dramatic format.
