1913réf. 1005J3London: Simpkin Marshall Hamilton Kent & Co. 1913. First edition. Cloth. Very Good Indeed/Fair. 9" by 6". Not Stated. A scarce first edition dramatisation of Oscar Wilde's seminal novel The Picture of Dorian Gray adapted for the stage by Grace Constant Lounsbery with a Rex Whistler bookplate. An excellent first edition of The Picture of Dorian Gray A Play in Three Acts by Grace Constant Lounsbery published in 1913 by Simpkin Marshall Hamilton and Kent and printed at the Ballantyne Press.Bound in the publisher's original cloth binding with gilt illustrations. Scarce with the original dust wrapper. Lounsbery was an American author poet and playwright. Prolific among the early twentieth-century Parisian literary circle Gertrude Stein once wrote of having a romantic relationship with Lounsbery. She often hosted events at her Parisian salon some of which Stein Ernest Hemingway and Ezra Pound are known to have attended. Her dramatisation of Wilde's novel completments her rebellious corpus of work including her radical politically-charged poem Satan Unbound. This copy with an exquisite bookplate to the front paste down designed by Rex Whistler. A fantastic gothic scene incorporating elements of classical and biblical mythology. Includes his monogram RJW to the lower right corner dated 1925.The bookplate is that of Whistler's associate Ronald Fuller of Merton College Oxford with his inscrption to the front free dated May 18th 1924. Ronald Fuller went on to co-author The Work of Rex Whistler with Whistler's brother Laurence in 1960.An additional previous bookseller's stamp to the front pastedown. Embossed crest to the front free 'sic jovat perilsse'. Bound in original publisher's cream cloth binding with scarce original dust wrapper. Externally very smart. Fading and marks to boards. Light bumping to extremities noticeable at lower front corner. Dust wrapper fragile missing the spine with front cover and fly leaf detached. Heavy chipping resulting in loss of paper and notable sunning to wrap. Bookplate of Ronald Fuller by Rex Whistler and bookseller stamp to front paste down. Inscription of Fuller and embossed stamp to front free. Internally firmly bound. Pages bright and clean. Scattered spotting to end papers. Very Good Indeed Simpkin, Marshall, Hamilton, Kent & Co. hardcover
1908réf. SFCX0005Charles Carrington Paris 1908. Book. Near Fine. Hardcover. 3rd Edition. The third Carrington edition limited to 250 copies and issued after his Paris firm acquired the rights from Lock Ward registering them at Stationers' Hall on November 11 1907. Small 4to. 312pp. A magnificent Édouard Pagnant fine binding in three-quarters blue morocco with five raised bands marbled paper sides gilt lettering rules and tooling and marbled endpapers. Top edge gilt. Retaining the original claret-coloured paper wrappers with the black and red lettered title label. The title page printed in black and red. 1877réf. 57710THREE RARE EARLY WILDE POEMS 8vo. 4 collective volume title page & half-title 2 corrigenda ii 344 plus bound in at the beginning of each of the 12 issues 2 leaves with the original issue title page and its list of contributors contemporary half brown morocco brown cloth on sides very neatly rebacked with the original spine relaid very good. Signed on front free end paper "T. W. Rolleston" and with quite a number of manuscript corrections throughout. This magazine was first issued three issues per year as wrappered magazines. At the completion of the volume 12 issues the remaining stock was issued as a bound volumes in cloth with a general title page. However in the publisher's cloth issue the title pages and contributors lists for the individual issues were discarded as the pagination is continuous without them. Here these have most unusually been retained. This volume contains in the Trinity and Michaelmas 1876 and Hilary 1877 some of the very earliest of Oscar Wilde's published work. These are Mason Wilde Bibliography 72 73 and 74. These all predate Wilde's first separately published book Ravenna of 1878 and all three were later included in Wilde's Poems of 1881 or 1908. W. H. Rolleston was among the other contributors as was Oscar's brother William. It appears that Rolleston had these issues bound himself and so the preliminary title and list of contributor leaves for the individual issues were retained. William McGee hardcover
