1882rif. 193139Philadelphia: J. M. Stoddart & Co. 1882. Deluxe edition and the first with an introduction by Wilde. The collection was first published in England as Songs in the South in 1881 but Wilde had the collection reprinted under the present title during his visit to America in 1882. Wilde added nine previously unpublished poems including "The Daisy" and omitted "Lucciole" and "Maidenhair". Rodd was a contemporary of Wilde's at Oxford and won the Newdigate Prize for English Verse two years after Wilde won for his poem Ravenna. Rodd was initially pleased with the publication despite Wilde's edits writing to the publisher that "I have seen no édition de luxe in England to compare with it. I have to thank you for the great care and delicacy with which this little book has been published" but he later requested that the dedication written by Wilde be removed from all future copies as it was "too effusive" quoted in Mason p. 185. A trade edition in cloth was published simultaneously. Octavo. With 115 numbered thin tissue leaves printed on recto only illustrations in text green tissue guards to each page text printed in brown. Original vellum spine and front cover lettered in red and black wax seal to front board in red and black white patterned endpapers top edge gilt others untrimmed a few leaves unopened. 1930rif. 23392New York: E. P. Dutton & Co 1930. Salome: A Tragedy in One Act. Second edition "new edition". 60 pp. Illustrated with four new designs by John Vassos. Issued as a new edition uniform with The Ballad of Reading Gaol and The Harlot's House and Other Poems. The Ballad of Reading Gaol. First Vassos-illustrated trade edition. 124 pp. Illustrated by John Vassos with tissue guards over the plates. The Harlot's House and Other Poems. First Vassos-illustrated edition. 102 pp. Illustrated by John Vassos. With presentation inscription to Francis Heisler noted civil-liberties lawyer and defender of COs in landmark mid-century cases dated December 7 1930 signed with the initials "E.S.T." incorporating a quotation from Thomas S. Jones Jr.'s poem "Dusk at Sea." The three volumes are in their original Art Deco bindings & dust jackets designed by John Vassos. They are preserved together in a contemporary specially constructed striking black-and-gold geometric Art Deco slipcase purpose-built to accommodate the complete group. The slipcase closely reflects Vassos's distinctive Art Deco aesthetic. Dutton is documented as having issued Vassos/Wilde volumes with slipcases although surviving institutional records do not conclusively establish this particular three-volume case as a standard Dutton issue. These three volumes represent a purposefully conceived Dutton uniform series of Oscar Wilde works illustrated by John Vassos. Dutton issued The Ballad of Reading Gaol in 1928 and The Harlot's House and Other Poems in 1929 followed by the 1930 "new edition" of Salome which was specifically described as "uniform with" the preceding two Vassos-illustrated volumes. The three books were therefore deliberately designed and presented by Dutton as a related group of Vassos-illustrated Wilde editions. E. P. Dutton & Co unknown

1904rif. 140581London: Privately Printed 1904. First separate edition of Wilde's classic collection of of mystery tales; a pirated edition produced by Leonard Smithers. Octavo bound in three quarter morocco over marbled boards with gilt titles to the spine original wrappers bound in. One of 300 numbered copies this is number 125. In fine condition. A very rare Wilde title. Wilde’s “theme is not as is often supposed art’s divorce from life but its inescapable arraignment by experience. His creative works almost always end in unmasking. The hand that adjusts the green carnation suddenly shakes an admonitory finger. While the ultimate virtue in Wilde’s essays is in make-believe the denouement of his dramas and narratives is that masks have to go. We must acknowledge what we are. Wilde at least was keen to do so. Though he offered himself as the apostle of pleasure his created world contains much pain” Ellmann xvi. Privately Printed hardcover
