2024Best.-Nr. SBBI-mon0000112379Methuen Drama UK 2024. paperback. Very Good. Most of our very good books have only minor imperfections such as shelf wear consistent with a new book that's sat on a bookshop shelf for a year or two. Occasionally we may miss other minor imperfections as we have to grade books at speed. Our books are dispatched from a Yorkshire former cotton mill. We list via barcode/ISBN so please note that the images are stock images and may not be the exact copy you receive furthermore the details about edition and year might not be accurate as many publishers reuse the same ISBN for multiple editions and as we simply scan a barcode or enter an ISBN we do not check the validity of the edition data when listing. If you're looking for an exact edition please don't order at least not without checking with us first although we don't always have time to check. We aim to dispatch prompty the service used will depend on order value and book size. We can ship to most countries see our shipping policies. Payment is via Abe only. Methuen Drama (UK) paperback

Leaf A4 recto: 'In memoriam C.T.W. sometime trooper of the Royal Horse Guards. Obiit H.M. Prison Reading Berkshire July 7th 1896.' Oscar Wilde was incarcerated in Reading Gaol after being convicted of gross indecency with other men and sentenced to 2 years hard labour in prison. He wrote The Ballad of Reading Gaol in exile after his release. The ballad narrates the execution of fellow prison inmate Charles Thomas Wooldridge who had been a trooper in the Royal Horse Guards. He had been convicted of cutting his wifes throat. The finished ballad was published in February 1898 under the name C.3.3 which stood for cell block 3 landing 3 and cell 3 - Wildes cell. This ensured that Wildes name by then notorious did not appear on the ballads front cover. The first edition of 800 copies sold out in a week. The publisher announced that a second edition would be ready the following week. That was printed in 1000 copies which also sold quickly. Further editions followed but it wasnt until the 7th edition that it was confirmed that Oscar Wilde was the author. Family history records show that Clara Trevelyan Hill was born on November 1 1865 in Carlisle Cumberland England her father Nicholas was 33 and her mother Lillias was 32. She had six brothers and five sisters. She died on September 1 1948 in Surrey England at the age of 82. She Married August Huttenbach in 1904 Partner of Huttenbach Brothers and Co. Singapore.
