Publisher's slipcase with light wear at the corners of the opening. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE - VALENTI ANGELO AND THE BOOK AS DECORATIVE OBJECT. Salome written by Wilde in French in 1891 and first published in 1893 became one of his most visually interpreted works most famously through Aubrey Beardsley's illustrations for the English edition. PRODUCTION BUILT AROUND THE ARTIST'S DESIGN. For the Heritage Press edition Valenti Angelo created an entirely different visual treatment integrating illustration typography ornament binding design and hand illumination into the physical structure of the book. Angelo was a prolific designer and illustrator for both the Heritage Press and Limited Editions Club and this edition is among the Heritage Press titles for which he supplied the complete decorative program. The result is particularly successful as an example of mid-century American illustrated book production: Wilde's decadent biblical drama recast through Angelo's highly stylized decorative vocabulary.
