2018réf. BIBHB0004744262018. Hardcover. New. ABOUT THE BOOK: A Gothic and philosophical novel by Oscar Wilde was first published complete in the July 1890 issue of Lippincott's Monthly Magazine. But it offended the moral sensibilities of British book reviewers. In response Wilde aggressively defended his novel. The longer and revised version of The Picture of Dorian Gray published in book form in 1891 featured an aphoristic prefacea defence of the artist's rights and of art for art's sake. The content style and presentation of the preface made it famous in its own right as a literary and artistic manifesto. The novel an archetypal tale of a young man who purchases eternal youth at the expense of his soul was a romantic exposition of Wilde's own Aestheticism. The novel became a classic of English literature and was adapted into a number of films most notably a 1945 version that earned multiple Academy Award nominations. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Wilde was an AngloIrish novelist playwright poet and critic and a celebrity in late 19th century London. Oscar Fingal O'Flahertie Wills Wilde was born in Dublin on 16 October 1854. His father was a successful surgeon and his mother a writer and literary hostess. Wilde was educated at Trinity College Dublin and Magdalen College Oxford. After graduating from Oxford University he lectured as a poet art critic and a leading proponent of the principles of aestheticism. As a dramatist many of Wilde's plays were well received including his satirical comedies. His output was diverse. His greatest talent was for writing plays and he produced a string of extremely popular comedies. On May 29 1884 Wilde married a wealthy Englishwoman named Constance Lloyd. They had two sons: Cyril born in 1885 and Vyvyan born in 1886. More than a century after his death Wilde is still better remembered for his witty imaginative and undeniably beautiful works. 2022réf. BIBHB0058498212022. Hardcover. New. About The Book : It seemed that a work so meritorious and so widely used especially in the secondary schools of France would be of value to teachers and pupils in American schools. The ability of the author to select significant events in the political and social history of the various nations is notable. Professor Seignobos willingly gave his consent to having the translation made. It was thought best to select material from- both the three volumes and the two volumes in so far as the one supplemented the other. Phrases here and there not regarded as essential to an understanding of the text have been omitted. The tables of contents have been made more usable. An index has been added to each volume and a general bibliography has been prepared for each period.
