1891réf. 260London: Ward Lock & Co 1891. First Edition. First printing without Bowden's name added to the title page imprint the Preface with Wilde's name at the end in larger bolder type and with "nd" for "and" beginning the eighth line from the bottom on page 208. The error was corrected for the second printing which included the 250 signed copies of the limited edition-copies that in addition to being the second issue are literally the second printing. This trade edition is not only earlier than the limited but when it has its dust jacket many times rarer. Original white vellum parchment-backed boards former owner's neat name to endpaper spine slightly faded from light not dust else near fine in the rare dust jacket with small tears and chips to the spine tips and corners neatly repaired a bit short an irregularity with nineteenth-century hand-trimmed jackets but a charismatic jacket still-integral clean and one to be owned with pride. An unequivocal Victorian classic as great a short novel as has ever been written and copies in dustjacket must have been dumped in the Bermuda Triangle because they never show up at auction or in the trade. Full morocco case. Wilde was from that atypical minority of great men those who do not remind us of anyone else. He wrote the best comedies since Shakespeare mastered paradox and was the reigning wit of the 1890s but he became a victim when society forgot that the mouse should never be a juror at the cat's trial. Dorian Gray was his only novel and why not When you write one like this one is sufficient. It's undeniably a modern Gothic and a self-evident Victorian classic unique in the delicacy of its grim and melancholy metaphor and it continues to maintain it's appeal even in our 21st century. 1882réf. List3658Boston Massachusetts: W. A. Evans & Bro 1882. Folio illustrated wraps. Pages detached from each other small chip to corner images and music fine remains good to very good and quite attractive. Good to very good. A visually striking example of Oscar Wilde-related ephemera issued during the height of the writer's American lecture tour of 1882. Though lacking a printed date the title strongly suggests publication in connection with Wilde's appearance at the Boston Music Hall on January 31 1882 where he delivered his lecture "The English Renaissance" as part of his widely publicized tour across the United States. Contemporary accounts describe the event as a notable cultural moment including the presence of Harvard students dressed in exaggerated aesthetic costume who occupied the front rows of the hall reflecting both the fascination with and satirical reception of Wilde's aesthetic persona.1 The lithographic cover prominently depicts a figure carrying an oversized sunflower an image closely associated with Wilde and the broader Aesthetic Movement. Such illustrated sheet music functioned not only as musical publications but also as collectible artifacts capitalizing on the figure of Wilde. Over the course of several months he traveled widely across the United States and Canada delivering lectures on art decoration and cultural taste and quickly became a subject of both admiration and parody in the American press. Although he never returned for a comparable national tour Wilde maintained a lasting connection to American audiences. We know of a variant edition of the Evans imprint with a different illustration as well as a different version published in Boston by Ditson the same year. OCLC 500491189 specifying this edition with the large sunflower illustration locating five copies. 1 "Freshmen at Oscar Wilde's Lecture" The Harvard Crimson February 1 1882. W. A. "Satyricon or Satyrica is a Latin novel believed to have been written by Gaius Petronius though the manuscript text of the Satyricon calls him Titus Petronius. The surviving text a mixture of prose and poetry details the misadventures of the narrator Encolpius and his lover a handsome sixteen year old boy named Giton. Throughout the novel Encolpius has a hard time keeping his lover faithful to him as he is constantly being enticed away by others. Encolpius' friend Ascyltus who seems to have previously been in a relationship with Encolpius is another major character but he disappears from the narrative half way through the surviving text. It is a rare example of a Roman novel the only other surviving example quite different in style and plot being Metamorphoses written by Lucius Apuleius. It is also extremely important evidence for the reconstruction of what everyday life must have been like for the lower classes during the early Roman Empire. Covici Friede Publishers hardcover books

Overall a beautiful copy of one of Wilde's four celebrated drawing-room plays. Mason 365. A Woman of No Importance is a four-act play that was first produced in London at the Haymarket Theatre on April 19 1893. Like many of Wilde's plays it satirizes the English upper-class and criticizes Victorian society. The title "a woman of no importance" refers to the character Mrs. Arbuthnot who bears the illegitimate son of Lord Illingworth. Although societal conventions deem her a sinful woman Wilde proves Arbuthnot a respectable widow who is rewarded with a son who treats women respectfully. In contrast Illingworth one of Wilde's archetypal dandy figures is rejected by his son and many of the women in the play making him a "man of no importance." A Woman of No Importance was published simultaneously in two formats: small octavo the standard edition of 500 copies and quarto the "Large Paper" issue of 50 copies. While both constitute the first edition of A Woman of No Importance the large paper copies are decidedly rarer than the octavos; intended to be more exclusive and deluxe publications large paper formats were typically produced using higher quality materials lacked the publisher's advertisements and were printed in small print runs. Because they were intended as collectibles from publication large paper copies of Wilde's plays are exceedingly scarce. First Edition Limited Large Paper Copy. Hard Cover. Near Fine.
