Born and educated in Poland Olbinski's ties to European and American culture as well as being an exponent of classical art blurs the lines between the various disciplines of the arts by combining: painting illustration graphic design typography and stage design into poignant and memorable images that help define our culture and raise the level of aesthetics for today's and future generations." -- dj flap. 1891réf. 158131891. Ricketts Charles. London: James R. Osgood McIlvaine and Co. 1891. Original salmon paper-covered flexible boards decorated in dark red. First Edition of this collection of four dark semi-comic mystery tales. "Lord Arthur Savile's Crime" is an amusing but macabre tale if there can be such a thing about a young man who convinced by Lady Windermere's cheiromantist that he is doomed to commit murder does his best to do so prior to getting married -- out of a sense of duty to his fiancée. As one would expect Lord Arthur bungles his mission. In addition to the title story this book includes "The Sphinx Without a Secret" "The Canterville Ghost" and "The Model Millionaire." The binding of this title with decorations by Charles Ricketts is extremely delicate -- paper-covered flexible boards; although 1500 copies were issued we find this book to be quite uncommon and we have never seen a truly fine copy. In our experience THE PICTURE OF DORIAN GRAY THE HOUSE OF POMEGRANATES and this title are the three Wilde first editions most difficuilt to find in collectible condition. This copy is close to near-fine with a bit of the darkening and mottling of the spine that is typical for this fragile book but with scarcely any actual wear. Mason 345. Housed in a handsome gilt-paneled morocco-backed slipcase with inner chemise. unknown books
1899réf. 158271899. Shannon Charles. By the Author of Lady Windermere's Fan. London: Leonard Smithers and Co. 1899. Original mauve cloth decorated in gilt. First Edition consisting of 1000 regular copies so stated; there were also 100 signed copies on Van Gelder paper plus twelve signed copies on Japan vellum. This was the fourth and last of Wilde's four great comedies of manners -- following LADY WINDERMERE'S FAN published in 1893 A WOMAN OF NO IMPORTANCE 1894 and THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST 1899 five months earlier. "An Ideal Husband" had opened at the Theatre Royal on 3 January 1895 the actors had been quite annoyed that Wilde required them to rehearse on Christmas Day only to keep them waiting for him to appear. It was an immediate success but it was while "Earnest" and "Husband" were running that Wilde inadvisably filed suit against the Marquess of Queensberry father of Wilde's lover Lord Alfred Douglas for criminal libel; this quickly morphed into a charge of "gross indecency" against Wilde and when he was arrested in April his plays closed. Sentenced to two years' hard labour 1895-1897 upon his release he fled to France -- where he resided when this book was published. The artistic binding design is by Charles Shannon. This is a very good copy of a book that is difficult to find in any better condition: the spine is rather dull and there is moderate cover soil. Mason 385. Provenance: the front endpaper bears the signature "Wilmer C. France 1899". The pioneering female classicist Emily Wilmer Cave France 1868-1951 married name Wright after 1906 was born in Birmingham England and educated first at Girton College Cambridge then at the University of Chicago -- where she was a Fellow in Latin and in Greek while earning her Ph.D.; from 1897 until her retirement in 1933 which span includes the date this book was published she was a Professor in Greek at Bryn Mawr College. In 2022 the Cambridge Philological Society published a monograph by D.N. Greenwood about her "Steely-Eyed Athena: Wilmer Cave Wright and the Advent of Female Classicists. unknown books
1878réf. 151231878. the fine Bradley Martin copy Recited in The Theatre Oxford June 26 1878. Oxford: Thos. Shrimpton and Son 1878. Original grey printed wrappers. First Edition of Oscar Wilde's first book the Newdigate Prize-winning poem that he wrote while a student at Magdalen College. To quote from Pearson: He Wilde left Oxford in a blaze of glory. The subject for the Newdigate Prize Poem that year was Ravenna and it so happened that he had visited the place on his way to Greece the year before noting it as a theme for poetic treatment. He could therefore put in bits of local colour which the other competitors had to glean from books. He won the prize as John Ruskin and Matthew Arnold had done before him and declaimed the poem in the Sheldonian Theatre on June 26 1878. When the Professor of Poetry J.C. Shairp whose duty it was to suggest textual improvements to the winner of the Newdigate advised certain alterations Wilde listened with due courtesy took careful notes of every suggestion but went away and printed the poem exactly as he had written it. In this copy the slip "PRINTED IN GREAT BRITAIN" is affixed to the title verso. This is a remarkably fine copy of this very delicate piece light browning as usual around the edges of the wrappers but no wear. Though not really as scarce an item as one might expect for a first effort this is THE copy for condition and for provenance -- see below. Mason pp 241-249. Housed in a morocco-backed slipcase with inner chemise. Provenance: bookplate of H. Bradley Martin on the case's chemise. To this day the eight-part Bradley Martin sale of 1989-1990 remains the sale of a generation especially for the remarkable condition of his collection for this item see lot #3320. unknown books

A PRESENTATION COPY FROM WILDE TO ADOLPHE RETTÉ WITH WILDE'S INSCRIPTION AND SIGNATURE ON THE FRONT FLYLEAF. Mason 348. See also: Mikhail "Oscar Wilde: Interviews and Recollections" pp. 190-91. Spine faintly sunned covers with a few small bumps and dents perhaps original with the skin or intentionally made by the binder one or two negligible finger smudges but a fine clean copy with just insignificant imperfections. This is a very special presentation copy of Wilde's most controversial play inscribed to one of three writers the author invited to edit the original French script. In the Gospel of Luke Herodias the haughty wife of Antipas tetrarch of Galilee is so incensed by the preaching of John the Baptist against her sins that she determines to be revenged. She persuades her daughter Salomé to ask Antipas the girl's stepfather for John's head as the reward for her seductive dancing. Wilde's fertile imagination converts this story into a tale of juvenile infatuation scorned and turned into demented hate. Written and first published in French "Salomé" was to have been staged in London with Sarah Bernhardt in the title role but this was prevented by the Lord Chamberlain the theater censor. Thus the play was first performed in 1896 in Paris with Bernhardt in the title role but without Wilde in attendance since he was confined at the time in Reading Gaol. It was not performed in London until 1905 in a private performance and the censor's ban was not lifted until 1932. Adolphe Retté 1863-1930 was a French poet essayist and literary figure who initially was celebrated for his decadent and symbolist poetry but later experienced a profound spiritual awakening that led him to renounce his earlier works and embrace Catholicism. He was one of three French-speaking poets along with Stuart Merrill and Pierre Louÿs Wilde solicited to look over the original script and correct any overt anglicisms. Retté who had met Wilde in Paris wrote about his involvement with "Salomé" in his memoir where he describes his admiration for the work: "Not only were Wilde's ideas subtle and delightful but he knew how to enhance them seeming to caress each word with his irresistible way of speaking." Retté marveled at Wilde's "talent as a conversationalist or rather as a monopolizer of the conversation and the wonderful way he would set forth the philosophy of 'hedonism.'" Wilde presentation copies are not exceptionally rare in general but we could find few such copies of this important first edition and none any more important as this one.
