Translated into English by Sebastian Melmoth pseudonym of Oscar Wilde. This is now considered to be a spurious Wilde piece; the Paris bookseller who printed it Charles Carrington apparently invented the Wilde connection in order to spur sales. 1908réf. F-5A scandalous story of love between an abbot and a 14-year-old novice which ends in a collective suicide on the altar. In this edition the only Russian one it is attributed to Oscar Wilde. It was actually written by Wilde's "friend" John Fr. Bloksem 1873-1928 and published in the only issue of the journal "Chameleon" published by him 1894. Written under the influence of Wilde and with his approval the story "The Priest and the Acolyte" was discussed in the same year at his trial. An anonymous translator attributed this text to Wilde in the preface and gave the whole book as a title the nickname of Wilde himself — "The King of Life". The book was banned in England Russia and even in Soviet times in the 1940s and 50s see Glavlit lists in: Blum A. Index Librorum Prohibitorum of Foreign Writers and both Glavlit Blum and the catalogers of the RSL and RNB mistakenly indicate Wilde as the author of this book. Printed in the ephemeral publishing house "Icarus" in the font "antique". A literary curiosity a rarity. WorldCat and KVK do not find any copies of the book outside of Russia. Icarus paperback

1997réf. 362780Cambridge MA: MIT Press 1997. 1st. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. Hardcover 176 pages. Albert Renger-Patzsch together with August Sander and Karl Blossfeldt was one of the undisputed pioneers of twentieth-century German photography. Indeed what Sander achieved in portrait photography and Blossfeldt in plant photography Renger-Patzsch achieved in his renderings of objects and the material world. As a protagonist of the movement that came to be known as Neue Sachlichkeit New Objectivity he wanted to record phenomenologically as it were the exact appearance of objects -- their form material and surface. Thus he rejected any kind of artistic claim for himself. Believing that the photographer should strive to capture the "essence of the object" he called for documentation rather than art. 2001réf. 369099Cambridge MA: The MIT Press 2001. 1st. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. 144 pages. Hardcover with dust jacket. Clean tight copy in publisher's shrinkwrap. Karl Blossfeldt 1865-1932 achieved overnight fame in the late 1920s with the first publication of his photographs of plants. Those photographs which revealed the inner structures of the organic forms immediately made him a pioneer of New Objectivity―an innovative movement in art and photography of the 1920s and 1930s. Blossfeldt however was neither a trained photographer nor a botanist. He was a sculptor and art professor who did his photographic work to generate teaching material for his students. The publication of this book is the result of an extraordinary event―the 1997 discovery in Blossfeldt's estate of sixty-one previously unknown collages in virtually mint condition of photographic contact prints arranged on large cardboard sheets. Blossfeldt apparently used these to study the relation and similarity of the photographs and to compare them graphically and aesthetically. On some Blossfeldt had made marks or handwritten notations. Others show lines for cropping. The collages published here for the first time unveil a hidden treasure of modern photography and cast fresh light on the systematic approach Blossfeldt used in his photographic studies. All collages are reproduced in four colors. Introducing the book is an essay by Swiss art historian Ulrike Meyer-Stump a Lecturer at the Zurich University of the Arts.
