Described hard and in detailbut fairly and honestly - still an acceptable stop-gap example. Originally an Oscar Wilde letter to 'Bosie Lord Alfred Douglas written whilst incarcerated in Reading Gaoltowards the end of his sentence between Jan to March1897.Allowed to take it with him on his release 18 May1897he entrusted it to journalist Robert Ross another former loverloyal friend and rival to "Bosie" and Wilde's literary executor. Ross typed two copies. Those typescripts copies contained several hundred errorsincluding typist's mistakeshis own emendations and other omissions.Book was published posthumously in 1905five years after Wilde's death. But Ross had excised its autobiographical elements and expurgated all references to the Queensberry family.A secondslightly expanded version appeared in an edition of Collected Works of Wilde published by Ross between 1908 and 1922.Also included were three other letters Wilde wrote from Reading Prison and his two letters to the editor of the Daily Chronicle written after his release.Ross then donated the manuscript to the British Museum with the understanding that it would not be made public until 1960.Vyvyan HollandWilde's sonin 1949 published the full textbut was using the faulty typescript bequeathed to him by Ross and it wasn't until 1962that the newfull and correct version was published in a volume titled 'The Complete Letters of Oscar Wilde.' Bright crisp clean glossy laminated wrap-around ochre background; front of dw/dj with a central black decorated edge bordered oval white vignette with 3 Victorian character figures portrait colour illustration by Alan Lee; black lettered title across front top edge with author'a capitalised black name underneath and illustrator's other black-lettered name inside the vignette at its top. Negligible shelf-wear to edges and corners - spine ends with infinitesimal crease - no nicks tears or splits present no rubbed corner tips - a major asset for this specific title as the paper stock used by Franklin Watts for this 1971 run was delicate and prone to edge-chipping. Top edges with minimal sporadic faint dust flecks fore-edges bright crisp and clean without foxing/spotting; contents text block bright tight crisp and clean other than very minimal faint sporadic tiny specks decreasing in visibility and presence from both sides of the half-title the title page plus paginated pages pp6-17 pp38-41 pp46-47 pp54-57 and pp60-67 each with a single mirrored spot to each page pp68-73 with a couple of spots - with pp71/72 production wrinkle/fold/crease at top edge - leaving an impression of same to concomitant area of preceding and following faces pages i.e. pp70 and pp73 respectivelythe remaining pp77-80 with either a single or a double speck of foxing. These following pages pp18-37 pp42-45 pp48-53 pp58-59 pp74-76 brightcrisp and clean - and virtually foxing-free. Many copies of this vintage suffer heavily from browning due to the high-acid paper stock used in early 70s UK trade publishing but this example is much less affected and the exception to rule. Visually the external appearance is still exceptional and particularly internally is also in an exceptional condition/state of preservation and presentation for a book of it's nature i.e. a child's book and its 55 year-old age. It really is an exceptional exemplary example for it's brightness cleanliness and lack of use or any other usual age-acquired detracting faults commonly encountered in a book of a comparable age. A highly sought-after collector's item. Published early in the artist's career - long before his definitive work on Tolkien's universe - this volume showcases Lee's original brown watercolour and pencil illustrations in a distinct sepia/monochrome palette - depicting high-society Victorian scenes with Lee's signature delicate linework and fine detail. As a piece of art history this 1971 edition serves as an important benchmark. It captures Lee's transition from a young commercial artist to being especially known for his amazing artwork inspired by J. R. R. Tolkien's fantasy novels and later as a pre-eminent concept designer on the Peter jackson's movies of Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit and on other movies as Legend Erik the Viking King Kong and the TV mini-series Merlin. An early pre-Tolkien work by master illustrator Alan Lee occupying a unique protected niche in the book-collecting market. The publishing house Franklin Watts Inc. was formed in 1942 and sold to Grolier in 1957. Franklin Mowry Watts 1904–1978 the namesake founder retired in 1967.
