This collection of aphorisms was originally written for and published in the first and only issue of the Oxford University magazine The Chameleon Vol. 1 No. 1 December 1894 the successor to "The Spirit Lamp." One of Wilde's recent biographers Joseph Pearce notes that these aphorisms undoubtedly have "an air of subversive decadence that undermined conventional values." Mr. Wilde's opening observation is a good example: "The first duty in life is to be as artificial as possible. What the second duty is no one has as yet discovered." The present work is in fact a pirated edition see Mason of which several variations are known. The limitation notes: "of this work seventy-five copies have been printed for private circulation" this being copy no. 35 noted in black ink. The Picture of Dorian Gray: A Play in Three Acts and Prologue. Dramatized by G. Constant Lounsbery from the romance of Oscar Wilde. London: Simpkin Marshall Hamilton Kent & Co Ltd. 1913. A near fine copy the binding clean and unusually bright for this fragile white buckram issue. An uncommon early stage adaptation of Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray prepared by G. Constant Lounsbery for theatrical performance. While Wilde himself had explored dramatization during his lifetime no authorized stage version achieved lasting success leaving later playwrights to reinterpret the novel for the stage. This 1913 adaptation reflects the continued fascination with Wilde's most controversial work in the years following his death translating the novel's themes of aestheticism morality and duplicity into a dramatic format.
