"Satyricon or Satyrica is a Latin novel believed to have been written by Gaius Petronius though the manuscript text of the Satyricon calls him Titus Petronius. The surviving text a mixture of prose and poetry details the misadventures of the narrator Encolpius and his lover a handsome sixteen year old boy named Giton. Throughout the novel Encolpius has a hard time keeping his lover faithful to him as he is constantly being enticed away by others. Encolpius' friend Ascyltus who seems to have previously been in a relationship with Encolpius is another major character but he disappears from the narrative half way through the surviving text. It is a rare example of a Roman novel the only other surviving example quite different in style and plot being Metamorphoses written by Lucius Apuleius. It is also extremely important evidence for the reconstruction of what everyday life must have been like for the lower classes during the early Roman Empire. Covici Friede Publishers hardcover books

19288vo. 236p. Limited to 1200 copies. The vivid, elegant, and mildly erotic Satyricon is usually attributed to Nero's friend, Gaius Petronius Arbiter. The surviving portions of the text detail the misadventures of the narrator, Encolpius, and his lover, a handsome sixteen-year-old boy named Giton. Throughout the novel, Encolpius has a hard time keeping his lover faithful to him as he is constantly being enticed away by others. Encolpius's friend Ascyltus (who seems to have previously been in a relationship with Encolpius) is another major character. It is one of the two most extensive examples of the Roman novel, the only other being fully extant Metamorphoses of Apuleius, which is quite different in style and plot. It is also extremely important evidence for the reconstruction of what everyday life must have been like for the lower classes during the early Roman Empire. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! W121

Notes: The Satyricon is a Latin work of fiction believed to have been written by Gaius Petronius though the manuscript tradition identifies the author as a certain Titus Petronius. The Satyricon is an example of Menippean satire which is very different from the formal verse satire of Juvenal or Horace. The work contains a mixture of prose and verse commonly known as prosimetrum; and serious and comic elements. Scholars often describe it as a "Roman novel" without necessarily implying continuity with the modern literary form. Size: 4to 237x166mm. Illustration: With a frontispiece and 100 illustrations by Alexander King. Transation: Oscar Wilde Category: Book Literature Hogarth Press hardcover

2020br.

1947réf. 872Q10New York: Random House 1947. First edition. Cloth. Near Fine/Near Fine. 8" by 5.5". None. A well presented first edition of this collection of humorous detective stories following the stories of Pete Moran an unsuccessful student of detection. An uncommon first edition of this work in original publisher's cloth binding and unclipped dust wrapper. This work was written by American author and playwright Percival Wilde who is best known for his many one-act plays. He had a very thorough style of research and for this particular novel he enrolled in a correspondence course for detecting. He took this course under a pseudonym giving the best answers he could whilst using the worst english and spelling. P. Moran Operative follows the experiences of Pete Moran in his course of detection. Despite the best intentions Pete has the longest track record for never being right. This work contains seven short stories of Moran's adventures. In original publisher's cloth binding with decorative detailing to the spine and original unclipped dust wrapper. Externally excellent with very minor shelf wear. Light bumping to head and tail of the spine. Dust wrapper in excellent condition with minor chipping to the extremities. The odd mark to the wrap mainly to the rear. Internally firmly bound with bright clean pages. Near Fine Random House hardcover
