The first and still foundational bibliography of Oscar Wilde compiled by his friend and literary defender Christopher Sclater Millard writing under the pseudonym "Stuart Mason." Produced with the close cooperation of Robert Ross Wilde's literary executor this work remains indispensable for collectors scholars and the trade. Millard's bibliography is far more than a mere listing: it provides detailed descriptions of Wilde's books pamphlets periodical contributions and translations along with valuable notes on variants piracies and publication history. Issued at a time when Wilde's reputation was still in recovery following his death in 1900 the book represents an early and important effort to establish a serious scholarly framework for Wilde's oeuvre. Particularly useful are the numerous facsimiles - title-pages wrappers and documents - which give the work practical bibliographical authority and make it a key reference for identifying first editions and priority issues. A cornerstone Wilde reference here in an attractive mid-twentieth-century morocco binding well suited to the collector's shelf. London: T. Werner Laurie, 1916 unknown books

2008ref. ABE-1778099756031London: Penguin Classic 2008 A one off; this was a limited edition sealed inside a box. 1000 un-numbered copies were printed. BUT - this copy was inside a damaged box. The thing is it really doesn't need the box. It is bound in leather sourced from fallen animals and there are small imperfections on the leather which adds to the mature look. Bill Amberg was clear about this; he did not seek perfect leather but welcomes the odd marks and abrasions. And he chose Yapp binding for all the books in the series. What is Yapp binding Well that's a non reinforced leather binding designed to soften over the years. They used to issue Bibles that way. The leather starts out stiff-ish but as it ages it does so gracefully; it enfolds the book edges. This book also has a leather bookmark attached to it. So what you have here is the limited edition book but without the fancy box. If that appeals to you go for it. 4.2x16.4x23.6 CENTIMETERS. 1st Edition. Special Edition. Hardcover. Fine. ref. B9780520303218Paperback / softback. New. Conservative and progressive religious groups fiercely disagree about issues of sex and gender. But how did we get here Melissa J. Wilde shows how today's modern divisions began in the 1930s in the public battles over birth control and not for the reasons we might expect. By examining thirty of America's most prominent religious groups-from Mormons to Methodists Southern Baptists to Seventh Day Adventists and many others-Wilde contends that fights over birth control had little do with sex women's rights or privacy. Using a veritable treasure trove of data including census and archival materials and more than 10000 articles statements and sermons from religious and secular periodicals Wilde demonstrates that the push to liberalize positions on contraception was tied to complex views of race immigration and manifest destiny among America's most prominent religious groups. Taking us from the Depression era when support for the eugenics movement saw birth control as an act of duty for less desirable groups to the 1960s by which time most groups had forgotten the reasons behind their stances on contraception but not the concerns driving them Birth Control Battles explains how reproductive politics divided American religion. In doing so this book shows the enduring importance of race and class for American religion as it rewrites our understanding of what it has meant to be progressive or conservative in America. paperback
