This collection of aphorisms was originally written for and published in the first and only issue of the Oxford University magazine The Chameleon Vol. 1 No. 1 December 1894 the successor to "The Spirit Lamp." One of Wilde's recent biographers Joseph Pearce notes that these aphorisms undoubtedly have "an air of subversive decadence that undermined conventional values." Mr. Wilde's opening observation is a good example: "The first duty in life is to be as artificial as possible. What the second duty is no one has as yet discovered." The present work is in fact a pirated edition see Mason of which several variants are known. The limitation notes: "of this work seventy-five copies have been printed for private circulation" this being copy no. 35 noted in black ink. 1882réf. List3658Boston Massachusetts: W. A. Evans & Bro 1882. Folio illustrated wraps. Pages detached from each other small chip to corner images and music fine remains good to very good and quite attractive. Good to very good. A visually striking example of Oscar Wilde-related ephemera issued during the height of the writer's American lecture tour of 1882. Though lacking a printed date the title strongly suggests publication in connection with Wilde's appearance at the Boston Music Hall on January 31 1882 where he delivered his lecture "The English Renaissance" as part of his widely publicized tour across the United States. Contemporary accounts describe the event as a notable cultural moment including the presence of Harvard students dressed in exaggerated aesthetic costume who occupied the front rows of the hall reflecting both the fascination with and satirical reception of Wilde's aesthetic persona.1 The lithographic cover prominently depicts a figure carrying an oversized sunflower an image closely associated with Wilde and the broader Aesthetic Movement. Such illustrated sheet music functioned not only as musical publications but also as collectible artifacts capitalizing on the figure of Wilde. Over the course of several months he traveled widely across the United States and Canada delivering lectures on art decoration and cultural taste and quickly became a subject of both admiration and parody in the American press. Although he never returned for a comparable national tour Wilde maintained a lasting connection to American audiences. We know of a variant edition of the Evans imprint with a different illustration as well as a different version published in Boston by Ditson the same year. OCLC 500491189 specifying this edition with the large sunflower illustration locating five copies. 1 "Freshmen at Oscar Wilde's Lecture" The Harvard Crimson February 1 1882. W. A. 1969réf. 50211Amsterdam: Stedelijk Museum 1969. First edition. Near fine. Scarce catalogue of the 1969 exhibition of Arte Povera and Conceptual Art less known but as innovative and groundbreaking as the same year's more-mythologized "When Attitudes Become Form" and similarly an expression of its own curator's personality and vision. "Op Losse Schroeven" and "When Attitudes Become Form" were conceived planned and exhibited more or less concurrently but independently: Stedelijk Museum director de Wilde though supervising one curator and friendly with the other apparently shared no information in either direction despite considerable overlap in vision. If the curators were not well informed on their peer's progress those artists invited to participate in both exhibitions were: one of those artists Ger van Elk "made the curious suggestion that the physical similarity of the two men - each was solidly built bearded and bohemian in style - made it interesting for an artist to work with them both as their quickly staggered studio visits turned into a kind of performance; that of a curator chased by his doppelgänger" Rattemeyer. With work by Carl Andre Giovanni Anselmo Joseph Beuys Bill Bollinger Gerrit Dekker Barry Flanagan Bruce Nauman Richard Serra Robert Smithson Lawrence Weiner and others. 10.75'' x 8''. Original wrappers housing two bound portfolios designed by Wim Crouwel and Jolijn van de Wouw of Total Design Amsterdam. Text in Dutch and English. Illustrated in black and white. Printed on multi-colored paper. Light edgewear and soil to wrappers minor creasing to page edges. Stedelijk Museum unknown books

Born and educated in Poland Olbinski's ties to European and American culture as well as being an exponent of classical art blurs the lines between the various disciplines of the arts by combining: painting illustration graphic design typography and stage design into poignant and memorable images that help define our culture and raise the level of aesthetics for today's and future generations." -- dj flap. 2004réf. 81469bdFt. Pierce FL: Long Wind Publishing LLC. 2004. First Edition stated. Signed and inscribed by the illustrator Philip S. Steel. Square quarto white cloth hardcover 32 pp. Fine As New in a Fine As New dust jacket. From dust jacket: Performed across the entire State of Florida s a unique combination of a one-man monodrama and a traveling art exhibit Net Loss set tongues wagging about its controversial theme: the banning of certain types of net fishing in Florida and the staggering effect the ban had on generations of fishing families. It also broke ground as an innovative partnership between a dramatist and a painter with both disciplines sharing equal billing in the production. Net Loss also focuses on a larger issue the issue of art as social commentator. Although the net ban had taken effect several years prior to writer Evelyn Wilde Mayerson and artist Philip S Steel’s groundbreaking partnership the frustration felt by fishermen fairly roiled just below the surface of their feelings. Net Loss gave a voice to those who had virtually given up on ever having a public forum to express their disjoining sense of loss and helplessness. Although the production did not take an advocate’s position on either side of the question the audience was treated to a sympathetic examination of one fisherman’s take on what had happened to him and many of his friends. Here then is Net Loss reduced to its true essence. Evocative words and interpretive paintings that draw the reader down to the docks the fish houses and boats of a changing breed of people whose lives depend on a natural resource in a world not controlled by nature.
